Colón Cancer: Angels 11, Tigers 9

Colón is an overpaid number two. (Sorry, Richard, I hadda do it.) It makes you wonder, did they evaluate talent based on asking price? If that's true, I'll start telling the Angels' front office about my $12 million price tag. Two rotten starts in a row against a weak AL Central team, and this time with no excuse about temperature.

And we now have two guys who can't hit at the top of the lineup. God, Mike, get it over with and move Eckstein to the seven hole or something. But -- definitely encouraging -- two walks by the Eck and two by Figgins, neither of whom walk a lot. Eck's going to have to get a bunch more of those if he wants to stay in the leadoff spot. At least we got to see Troy hit one out, which made up for some awful defensive plays -- what was with Vlad's buttery-bad glove? Figgins isn't a centerfielder (where's the hat, Chone?), and all I can say about Amezega is that I'm glad we didn't get to see him play third.

Shields: blecch. One of his worst appearances this year. Why wasn't Gregg allowed to pitch more? And by the way, that was a passed ball and an error -- Shields was covering the plate when the run scored. They just didn't score it that way.

Somebody tell Hud that the Angels winning in Garret's absence is due to (a) the schedule's weakness (hey, we ain't playing the Yanks), and (b) the plain fact that durability and reliability aren't the same thing as greatness.

Wrapup

Richard is dancing in the aisles: Ramon has finally earned a demotion to the bullpen, says the Times, with Sele taking his place. Jeez, it took three losses in five starts to figure that out?
