12

The Devil Rays have won their 12th straight, 5-1 over the Blue Jays, making their win streak the longest currently active. Despite all of this, they're still two games under .500 and ten games behind the Yankees. If Baltimore finishes fourth -- unlikely but possible -- it would be incredibly embarrassing for the O's, whose offseason acquisition of power bats in the persons of Miguel Tejada and Javy Lopez have been more than made up for by their failure to properly evaluate and/or introduce their young pitchers into their rotation.

Comments:
Wow.. The second thing I'm going to be rooting for most now (obviously after dodgers/angels wins) is TB finishing in second or third (1st would be out of the question). second is probably impossible, but weirder things have happened. they're only 6GB of the sox.

Screw finishinh fourth- the O's look like they're headed for fifth. I don't think the Jays are as bad as they've been playing.

Also, how unfair is it that their starting to call for Tosca's head in Toronto? It has to be said: Riccardi has run that club into the ground. As much as I hate to see any of the sabermetric guys go, I think he's the one who needs to get the axe.

Sabermetrics is a means to an end, not an end in itself. Off the top of my head, Ricciardi has been the recipient of some bad injury issues this year, as well as consistent poor play from guys who shouldn't be playing that badly. On top of it, ownership wants to cut payroll to D-Rays levels. I don't care how smart you are, you can't build winning teams in that division without something like a league average payroll, and the warning shot across the bow has been fired: win or Ricciardi loses his job.

It doesn't speak well for a GM when his best acquisition over three seasons has been Ted Lilly- and that was a gift from Billy Beane.

And as for the tight budget- Riccardi knew what he was getting into. When he interviewed for the job he told ownership that he could put a playoff team on the field and decrease payroll. I'll give him credit- he’s accomplished one of those goals.
