Astros 3, Dodgers 2

First, a nearly obscene gaffe by Vinny: "Mota leads the league, with fifty one inches... er, innings". Now that's a horse!

Sadly, the rest of the game wasn't nearly as much fun as that, not, at least, if you're a Dodger fan. But at least there weren't any horrible moments, as with today's Angels game, no repeated gaffes as though the team were unwilling to learn from its mistakes. For Jeffy to keep pace with the Astros' Andy Pettitte and deliver a quality start, now, that's something, and a very good sign. Had the Dodgers had a quality left fielder instead of Paulie, this might be a Dodgers win I'd be writing about. Even in the ninth, the Dodgers put up quite an amazing threat, and had Green showed some plate patience and layed off the first two pitches -- down around his shins -- I'd be writing about how the Dodgers tied the game after Lidge filled up the bases.

But no.

I'm not horribly disappointed, though. The Dodgers actually played as well as you could ask an injury riddled team to play, what with Bradley out again, and Encarnacion landing on the DL with shoulder tendinitis and the same labrum fray he reported in the offseason. At least we're not the Astros, under the gun to produce in the next 16 days, or die. "It's Our Turn", their pre-season sales pitch, now sounds like hubris. Every Brad Lidge pitch is freighted with meaning, the team pasting their rickety hopes on one man's shoulders, the Astros ten games back of St. Louis, in fifth place.

The Astros give you pause to thank heaven for the dumb luck the Dodgers have had this season, because for every team with good luck, there's three with bad.

Once again, thanks to Fox for the HD. I'm still experiencing volume level freakiness, and Helen helped me figure it out: a volume drop always seems to follow a sharp noise, like a bat hitting a ball or a caught pitched ball. So perhaps somewhere along the line, it's a compression problem. This time wasn't as bad as the previous game, and owing to the night, no problems with image level, either. The audio continues to screw up and black out from time to time, though.

The image beats NTSC all to hell, though.

Comments:
What cable/satellite service do you have that actually carries FoxSports West in HD? I am only able to get regular Fox and ESPN in HD from my cable company (Charter). Just curious.

I have Time Warner cable. Unfortunately, distribution of HD signals on cable seems to be very system-dependent. I've had at least one reader suggest that satellite is the way to go for now for expanded HD selection, but it also has its annoyances (there are legal questions about whether they can rebroadcast local terrestrial stations such as KCBS, KNBC, KABC, etc.).

... and of course, Time Warner is feuding with Disney over ESPN prices, so we don't get ESPN HD right now.

Clarification: We don't get Fox Sports West in HD. We only get *some* Dodger games, on the channel labeled, "HDSpecial" When Dodger games aren't on, it's usually a blue screen with the schedule on it.
