Pathetic: Rangers 3, Angels 2

We're in the sixth and Ryan Drese -- who started last year with a 135.0 ERA after his first game in Seattle -- has allowed one run on four hits.

Lose this game, and the Angels are six back of first. Lose the series, and they're done.

Update: Lose it they do. As Sean observed, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, that is, time to start thinking about the Winter Meetings. At least they made one good move and DFA'd Shane Halter. About time; when bench guys are allowed to accumulate ten errors in only 243.1 innings, you've gotta think it's way past time.

I'm going to start thinking about what this team can do to right itself in 2005; on the surface, we're going to have some severe problems because of lack of production from Anderson (after a month and a half we can't just dismiss his lack of power as a fluke), Salmon (Timmy, you had a great career, but it's time to hang 'em up), and Erstad ($8M/year for J.T. Snow is just too much). Should the Angels create a logjam at first by returning Erstad to center and make Anderson play first, while hoping Kotchman finally shows up as the power hitter we've hoped for? Who will play centerfield, knowing Erstad won't last a whole season on his rickety hamstrings? And then what about the logjam in the infield if McPherson comes up and does acceptably? Ugh. Time to punt; more on this later.

Comments:
I'm afraid that unless Arte is willing to buy his way out of it, this team is trapped in a corner for the next couple of years. We have over $61m in guaranteed money set in 2005, including $37.75 in bad contracts to Colon, Anderson, Erstad, and Salmon. Assuming that Moreno want's the payroll at around $90m (which is where he wanted it this season), it looks like we are seriously boned.

I'm afraid you're right. The Anderson signing is about to turn bad in a hurry, Salmon has another year of bad hitting to punish us with, and we still have Erstad to deal with. Next year could be .500 very easily unless a lot of things go right, and with Barfolo failing to pull it together in even his first year looking simply awful, the team could become Baltimore West.

Moving right along... weren't you the one earlier who implied Arte would spend indefinitely? This was the scenario I feared: new/existing bad contracts would match or overcome new good contracts. The sum of Anderson, Erstad, and Salmon is a huge amount of wasted payroll. Will Arte eject those guys and eat their salary, too? I doubt it, and that's why we should be concerned about cash.

Stoneman's lack of foresight and his tendency to overpay for past performance is hurting us badly now.

The man has a does have a budget, but he's already shown that in order to build his brand he's willing to splash the cash (the Vlad signing). I'm fairly confident he will do the same thing here, but if he sees no way to out-spend the club's problems he may just keep his wallet in his pocket. How high will he have to take the payroll to fill our holes? He might decide it's better to take a year or two to work off some of the fat.
