Pickoff Moves

Shut Up, Already

Randy Johnson-to-the-somebodies, again. Look, Shaikin, if you don't have a real story, stifle, wouldja? Of course, the Register counters with its own story carrying the lede, "Johnson unlikely to be Angel". So there, and whew.

Anniversaries

Some anniversaries: the Oakland A's World Series victory in 1974, and the New York Giants' of 1954.

Jamie McCourt Blinded

No kidding, from a bacterial infection in her right eye. Her doctor doesn't know whether the loss of vision is permanent. For all the invective I've dumped on the McCourts, I certainly don't wish ill on them personally; I had an iris infection a number of years ago, and it was one of the most painful and scary things I've ever undergone. Speedy recovery, Jamie.

You Can't Prove It

MLB's inquiry into Mondesi's mid-season defection turned up nothing, which surprised nobody. Mondesi "hopes to return next month", something he said last month. So long as the date keeps moving forward, it's fine with me.

Now We Know Why No Weaver

In the Register story above about Johnson's non-Angelness, finally a reason for the absence of Jered Weaver news: "Baseball has asked teams not to sign top college picks until lower-round picks have signed." What? About the only reason I can think of for doing that is Selig doesn't want Scott Boras setting the market with Weaver. See what fun you can have with an anti-trust exemption?

Comments:
ridiculous that they want 2 or even 3 of our uber-prospects.
