Pickoff Moves

Twins 6, Angels 3

Same old Ramon. Just when you start thinking he's worth something, too.

Dodgers 2, Pirates 1

A lot of the comments about the Angels' hitting versus lousy teams apply to the Dodgers tonight. <Insert platitude here about "a win's a win">. Certainly, Lima's happy to get the big diez; I thought he might be in shock when he ran out to the mound to greet Gagné after the save.

But perhaps I'm being too hard on the Bucs. The Pirates have lately been pretty good about unloading guys who would've been expensive to resign (Aramis Ramirez, Brian Giles), are perennial club-hoppers (Kenny Lofton, ditto), or are mediocrities in short supply (Kris Benson), in exchange for quality rookies and prospects (Jason Bay, Ty Wigginton, Oliver Perez, etc.) For a last-place team, they aren't as bad as you might think.

Or else the Dodgers are in real trouble this weekend when they play the Phillies.

Recap

Yankees 8, Oakland 6

Even at the expense of an Oakland win, I'm in favor of the Yankees losing. So it was with no small amount of guffawing that I read the Yanks' headcase swap had a predictable result. Sadly, Dotel blew the save and now has an ERA of 3.97, perilously close to a bad place. Well, it's the Yanks... what did you expect?

More Blogiverse Reaction To DePo's Big Trade

Texas Rangers Blog chimes in with what appears to be settling in as a concensus view in bloggerdom: the Fish got ripped. Sarah Morris more or less concurs. At least, unlike some now singing DePodesta's praises for having guts to pull off this unpopular trade, she didn't complain when Evans didn't make any midseason moves with farmhands.

In the not-quite-bloggerly part of town, Baseball Prospectus likes the trade for the Dodgers but doesn't think it's as one-sided as most other observers because of the breakdown in VORP, contract status, and dollars:

                         2004
Player Age VORP Contract Status
Brad Penny 26 33.3 FA in '05
Hee Seop Choi 25 27.9 Arb in '06
Bill Murphy 23 -- n/a

Paul Lo Duca 32 22.6 FA in '05
Guillermo Mota 31 24.4 Arb in '05
Juan Encarnacion 28 0.4 Owed $2 MM in '05
Encarnacion is a lead weight to the bottom of any team's division, but the Marlins desperately needed an upgrade at catcher, and likewise their bullpen was getting torn apart. Mota might get a chance at closing, but it won't last long.
