Reds 12, Giants 3

Road comebacks are great to get, so after a tough season with so much early promise (recall the Reds led the NL Central as recently as June 10th) it must have felt great for the Reds to get... ten runs in the top of the eighth at SBC Park. I imagine the Giants miss Felix Rodriguez, whichever version they happened to have around, but Only Baseball Matters puzzles over why Sabean didn't make a deadline trade, when he's done so many good ones in the past. But the Giants' window for a World Series victory is over; the team that came within six outs in 2002 is long gone, and in its place, a shadow, poltergeists, pygmies in leotards who man their positions as one of the game's titans slips into irrelevance.

Thanks for the correction. That's two in one night... man, my head's really rattling.

""We're only three games out in the Wild Card, so who cares if we're behind the Dodgers," said the southpaw[scott eyre]. "We're still in the playoff [hunt] and we have a big series coming up against the Cubs, who lead the Wild Card. We sweep them and it's right there."

guess they're pretty much given up on the division now ^_^

I find myself now in the curious position of rooting for the padres -- kind of. They're far back now that I feel comfortable enough to hope they win and can take the wild card. I'd really rather play atlanta than chicago first round. not that I'd be terribly distressed if SD is 10GB come next week hah.

Matt -- as you probably know, I'm not allowed to root for the Padres, though my wife has good friends who are Pads fans and have been very kind to us over the years. We're watching the Pads/Phillies game now on HD, and San Diego's on its way to a 6-3 defeat. Trevor Hoffman choked and gave up a single that scored three, thanks to Brian Giles' attempt to end the inning with a diving catch -- that didn't work.

The Cubs will be two games up in the Wild Card if the Pads lose. Needless to say, 6-4-2 World Headquarters is cheering on the Phillies.

Christamightydamn, make that Phils 5, Pads 3.

Hon, anyone can root for the Padres in this house. We still believe in the Bill of Rights here, you know. However, the 6-4-2 World Headquarters Administrix reserves the right not to cook for those actively rooting against the Cubs.

I frequently root for the Padres, and was almost rooting for 'em tonight. (But I checked my veins and it looked like the blood in 'em was still Cubbie blue.) In addition to having two dear friends with season tics to Petco (and who had season tics for many years at Qualcomm, so great is their fandom,) I can honestly say that trips to San Diego to see the Cubs have been far more pleasant that trips to Chavez Ravine or Angel Stadium. Folks in San Diego love their team, they are simply civilized about it. I have genuine affection for the Pads and their fans because of this.

I suspect, however, that Dodger fans might not find Petco quite as welcoming.
