Astros-Kicking: Astros 8, Braves 5
This game, both clubs reached for their bullpens relatively early, though interestingly, the Braves did so much earlier than the Astros as Brandon Backe came up huge for Houston with only two earned runs in six innings. This is his first year starting in the majors, and today is only his tenth start in the bigs, ever. We saw Houston starter Roy Oswalt warming up when the score was 4-2 in the fifth, but then Chad Qualls got the nod when the advantage became five runs in the fifth. Fortunately for the Astros, after the offensive outburst, Oswalt was unnecessary, and they club has a good option going into any fifth game -- which the Astros must hope won't be necessary.

Actually, Springer's regular season line was pretty good (0-1, 2.63 ERA), but with trailerpark peripherals (5.93 K/9, 1.50 K/BB). Even so, letting him go out there rather than Lidge is smart use of your bullpen in a case with a big lead.
One away from Houston glory -- an insufficient kind of glory, but glory nonetheless.
I feel so famous. (This is consolation for not having the Cubbies out there. Not that the Cubbies deserved to be there. I just would have enjoyed it more if my undeserving favorite team would have made the postseason.)
I think I'm rooting for Houston in the NL, and definately the Red Sox in the AL. I figure if the 'stros win it all then maybe Clemens will retire, and if the Sox win at least one supposed curse will go the way of the Dodo.
