Footnotes On The NL Wildcard

I've written the Cubs off this year for the Wild Card, as I don't think they've got the offense to get over the hump; Nomar, for instance, was 5-15 in the late Cincinnati series, but that's misleading. Subtract the 3-3 day he had in the first game of the series, and he suddenly becomes a 2-12 hitter. And he's only one example. Leadoff man Cory Patterson went 3-18, and is far from the team's best OBP guy at .322; they need a quality leadoff man, but Patterson is not it.

Likewise, the Padres aren't going anywhere, either, a big disappointment for their first year in Petco. The fans didn't seem to mind much, coming out three million strong; the Cubs, also, surpassed that mark, surprisingly for the first time ever. In fact, the Yankees, Angels, Dodgers, Giants, Phillies and Cubs have all surpassed that mark, with the Padres and Astros set to accomplish the 3,000,000 number before season's close.

The Astros, on the other hand, just got done sweeping the cruising Cards, and face the Rockies for their final series. The Rockies, that is, who just appeared in a night game at Chavez Ravine. Think they'll be tired from all that flying?

Thanks to Dodger Thoughts reader driches for pointing out that a single Houston loss guarantees a Dodger playoff spot -- the Wild Card.
