Mid-day Pickoff Moves

Schilling Scratched For Game 5

Curt Schilling's ankle has become the Red Sox's Achilles heel:
"He's just a little too sore to go attempt his side session today," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "So what they'll do is they'll continue to work on Schil with the medical staff, the training staff, but as far as Sunday goes, he's not our starter."

OT: Wired, You Bet

Thanks to Random Fandom for this jape. Sure, I'd rather listen to the Red Sox and Yankees game than either of Kerry or Bush natter on about mumbledy-whatever -- or Lynne Cheney's screeching whenever Kerry mentions her daughter is gay.

Lima Time Lives On

Imitation is the sincerest form of Lima Time, says Houston starter Pete Munro:
"[Jose's NLDS Game 3 performance] was definitely a positive thing," Munro said. "I mean, I guess me and Jose have similarities in a way that we pitch and our stuff, the way he changes speeds and has to locate. So we are looking at some [video] tapes, and Lima is one of them."

Prospect Negotiations Fall Apart

The Tigers pulled the plug on their offer to RHP Justin Verlander after contentious negotiations fell through. "Detroit had offered the Old Dominion righthander a major league contract worth significantly more than the $3.35 million bonus it gave Kyle Sleeth as the third overall pick in 2003."

This puts the Angels' situation with first-round pick Jered Weaver in even more doubt, because he has been thought to want the same kind of money Mark Prior got, in addition to a major league contract. Jim Callis hinted yesterday that "one frustrated club may pull its offer from the table" -- guess that was Detroit. The insanity of offering top prospects guaranteed major league contracts has to stop, and Detroit was wise to let Verlander walk rather than put up with that kind of nonsense.

And Now, Back To Your Moralizing, Which Was Already In Progress

Ken Caminiti indeed died of an overdose.

Ted Williams' Freezer Must Surrender Papers

The Arizona company storing Ted Williams' remains must surrender paperwork showing whether the company had legal authorization to freeze the body. What a joke this has become.

The Brewers claimed Derrick Turnbow off of waivers. I guess it was about time to go...
