Pickoff Moves

LAist On The Dodgers

LAist not only gives it up for the Bums, but makes his counterpart Shane at SFist eat crow and pony up in the form of a case of Rice-A-Roni. The article at LAist also has a nice little offseason conundrums-and-conniptions analysis that's worth a peek.

The Mysterious Case Of The Declining Catching Prospects

"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.
-- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, "Silver Blaze"
Wait Til Next Year has a sad and mystifying tale of four catching prospects, all of whom suddenly disappeared from view or declined substantially enough to put them at risk of the "suspect" label: And, just in case you were wondering, ex-Dodger, current-Diamondback Koyie Hill now assumes the mantle of "solid", but "[h]e probably won’t be a force as a starter anytime soon... expect Hill to spend quite a few years on a Major League roster somewhere."

It's tough behind the plate, but it's even tougher to get to the show there -- and stay there.

Bitterness, Recriminations, and Firings At Wrigley

Cub Reporter has had a lot to talk about lately. First, overly-aggressive "Wavin'" Wendell Kim has got the boot.

Second, Mark Grace wants to manage, and the Snakes are talking to him about this. Apparently, Arizona Republic columnist Dan Bickley has come out in favor of this harebrained idea (thanks to But It's A DRY Heat for the link).

Third: for my second-favorite NL team, Alex Ciepley goes around the horn analyzing what the team needs, as every good GM wannabe does this time of year. It won't be easy for the residents of Wrigley, whose once-star-studded outfield is both aging and/or injury-prone; as well, the club's got the free agency of Matt Clement to worry about.
