Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Ten years ago, the Angels were struggling to get respect and/or attendance. (Of course, 1994 was the season shortened by a strike, so the attendance numbers everywhere were reduced.)

But: reading this Wait Til Next Year comparison of top minor league shortstops (including Alberto Callaspo and Erick Aybar), I came across the following sentence: "what about the Dominican shortstops in the high-profile Red Sox and Angel organizations?"

A set of rings can do wonders for a team's perceived value.

That said, it's amazing what some people think will happen in the offseason. Brian Smith writes:

Arte Moreno will nearly surely sign either Nomar Garciaparra or Edgar Renteria. This officially puts Erick Aybar on the block, which is fine, considering some scouts like Brandon Wood better. I see Aybar sniffing an .800 OPS in his peak, with mostly a Cristian Guzman type career on the horizon. Actually, that’s a pretty sensational comparison.
Huh? Collaspo, Aybar, and Wood behind them, and Arte's gonna pick up the fragile, aging Nomar? Given the club's kissed both Troys goodbye, the team's shown a willingness to forego expensive and fragile free agents when similar talent exists within the organization's farm system. Tell you what, Brian: I'll eat my 2002 Angels World Series Champions hat if Nomar ends up in an Angels uni.

Comments:
There is some talk that Nomar is looking for a one year deal, to disprove the fragile prima-dona label and take a run at a big pay-day the following year. That’s probably the only way he ends up in Anaheim, and what’s more, I wouldn’t be opposed to that kind of deal.
