The Dodgers' Barren Farm
Reading this Baseball Prospectus article yesterday about Rookies of the Year who went on to great, not-so-great, and actually terrible careers, it occurs to me that the Dodgers haven't had legitimate ROY since Hideo Nomo. His ROY year was 1995... nine years since the Dodgers turned out one such. There were others, of course:
For most of these players, the shine of the "Dodgers" brand made them glow more brightly than it should have. Certainly, we can point to Gagné as an example of a home-grown player whose impact is more than average, but who else, besides? The drought grows longer. While I'm pleased to see that the recent drafts have brought buzz back to the Dodger farm system, it's far too early to say that it's arrived in full health until it actually produces quality major leaguers.Year Player BP Category ===================================== 1992 Eric Karros Regular 1993 Mike Piazza Superstar 1994 Raul Mondesi Regular 1995 Hideo Nomo Regular 1996 Todd Hollandsworth Fringe
Update: Yes, of course, I have to include Beltre in there. But -- after putting up with so many years of mediocrity and only getting a single quality year out of him -- am I not allowed to be somewhat skeptical as to his long-term contribution?
Also -- Baseball America comes out with its draft report cards, and ranks the Dodgers second overall. The Angels don't even make the top five (though they don't give out the other 25 teams' ranks here), and that's including the drafted-but-still-unsigned Jered Weaver.
