Beane Done Dealing
Stranger things have been heard, but not by reliable witnesses -- in the San Francisco Chronicle:
Beane said firmly in a conference call that Zito is safe and that the team's major dealing is done. Mulder's 2005 salary is $6 million, so the A's payroll is back down around $61.5 million after soaring past $70 million with the acquisition of Jason Kendall, who will earn $10 million in 2005. Beane said there was no directive from ownership to trim the payroll, but added he does have to adhere to a budget, and he's in favor of that.Zito is in the strange position of being the only one of the three prized starters remaining after a run of five years together in which the team made the playoffs four consecutive seasons (2000-2003).
