Chain Gang, Back On

Well, well, looks like things are spinning even larger: Rosenthal says the original three-way trade has become a four-way without mentioning the fourth team. The Daily News has it breaking down thusly: In this version of the trade, no cash changes hands. According to the Daily News article, Penny told ESPN he's scheduled for a physical for Arizona later in the week.

This is such a huge trade I can't imagine it going down as advertised until next week, a point the article makes. The Dodgers mainly get a lot younger and cheaper, but Garland's a 4-5 starter, and Marte's not really a replacement for Brazoban. Konerko displaces Choi; while he's much better than Choi presently is (48.1 vs 27.5 VORP), he's also getting paid $8M/year, and you can bet Choi will become a spare part to be flipped later. Considering PECOTA tags Choi and Konerko as roughly the same player, this doesn't make much sense; the Dodgers would appear to be overpaying for a second helping of Konerko's 2004, yet underestimating Choi's potential, something we allegedly wanted for last year.

Update: Now in the Times, and on dodgers.com.

"Marte's not really a replacement for Brazoban"

I'm don't think I understand what you mean here--isn't Marte pretty good?

Or do you mean because he's not nearly as cheap (arb. elibible)? Marte's a lefty and appears to have a bit of a platoon split, but he seems pretty good. Does Brazoban have an even greater upside?

A 3.42 ERA is not 2.48. Now, maybe you can rationalize some of that difference by observing that U.S. Cellular favors hitters even more than Dodger Stadium favors the pitcher; using ESPN's park factors, it ends up being close to a 3.00 ERA for Marte. Even so, Marte's nearing arbitration, but Brazoban wasn't.
