Dodgers News: Bradley, Beltran, And Belly

A couple items here from the Daily News: first, DePodesta has strongly hinted that Milton Bradley would be wise to agree to a new contract "without going to [arbitration]".
If Bradley and the Dodgers do end up in an arbitration hearing -- an often-contentious process in which a three-person panel must choose either the club's salary figure or the player's, with no compromise -- his series of outbursts, ejections and suspensions last season undoubtedly would be used against him when the club argues its case.

"I don't think we'll be going to arbitration with him," DePodesta said. "I don't think anybody wants that, and I don't think that would be a good process for Milton. I think we agree with his representatives on that."

Bradley's mercurial nature in arbitration? I can only imagine the fireworks...

Second, the Dodgers have announced they're out of the Beltran bidding. With the Dodgers short on pitching as well as requiring the services of a third baseman, they can't really afford the ridiculous contract Beltran's reportedly asked for.

"Not with all the other things we want to address," DePodesta said. "I talked to Scott (Boras, Beltran's agent) about it, and he made it clear that there probably wouldn't be a fit."

As for third baseman Adrian Beltre, another Boras client who is coming off a spectacular year in which he tied the single-season record for home runs by a third baseman, DePodesta seemed to imply it might take some creativity to bring him back to Los Angeles. The Dodgers have $41.45 million committed to four players next season and a $100 million budget.

Well, at least we know DePo won't just roll over for Boras. That's good news for Dodger fans.

Comments:
Its good for us how exactly that we won't compete for Beltran?

What is depo going to do to turn this team into a world series contender with McCourts budget?

Color me wacky, but if the Angels give Beltran the 5 year/$100M contract rumored earlier, or the reputed 9 year/$191M deal reported by ESPN radio, I think it amounts to overpaying. No way do you give any player much over three, not unless he's a very special player. (Hint: all of Scott Boras's clients are "very special", but only in his mind.)

Rob,

Love the blog. I am concerned with this idea that we can put together a world championship caliber team without investing in top notch free agents talent. Beltre will probably not have numbers like he did last year, and I don't see anyone else offensively on this team who is more than a C/B level performers. Top notch talent costs dollars and it looks like we are not willing to spend to get that level of talent.

Allow me to elaborate.

1) There is still no question in my mind that the Dodgers must spend some on quality free agents, and Adrian Beltre is the first such.

2) That said, it is possible to spend without spending wisely. See also, Malone, Kevin. To that end, the Dodgers have made some very nice but unheralded minor league free agent drafts.

3) I still maintain this offseason is the key test of Frank McCourt. If the $100M figure is bogus, 2005 will be... painful.

4) That said, I think Sabean may have underestimated DePo in his first year. He probably figured 90 wins would take the division, but simultaneously, he was handicapped by Robb Nen's absurd contract. He is not so encumbered this year, and has made some not-terrible pickups. None of the guys the Giants have acquired are gods, yet none of them will prove to be certifiable busts (see also, Perez, Neifi).

DePo has thus far impressed me favorably, despite the problems with Brad Penny and Hee Seop Choi. I do not think he will fail us.

Rob;
A bit off topic, but is no one concerned that Jim Colborn has not been offered a contract yet?? Unless I missed the news item. I don't think Tracy was thrilled with his arrangement and it seems Depo has a way of backing them into a corner when it's too late for them to go anywhere else.

This could be a very definite sign of cost cutting which could very well carry over into the player contract talks.

AHB
