Look Out, Bert
Today's HoF voting reminds me that there's a godawful lot of great players about to retire. If you're Bert Blyleven, it's bad news, considering shoo-ins like Tony Gwynn haven't come around to nomination eligibility, but lo: Bonds, Sosa, Clemens, Pudge Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Maddux, Mike Piazza, and Randy Johnson are all likely first-balloters, and Rafael Palmeiro, Mariano Rivera, and Griffey Jr. are distinct possibilities on their heels. On the other hand: the good news for Rich's pet project is that Blyleven's received the most votes he's ever gotten in the last five years:
It's a long climb from there to 75%, though...Year % of votes ================= 1999 14.1 2000 17.4 2001 23.5 2002 26.3 2003 35.4 2004 40.9
Update, 1/8/05: I got my numbers from somewhere on mlb.com, but I must have mistranscribed them. The corrected numbers -- at least for 2004-2002 -- from Mike's Baseball Rants -- are now up.
