Dodger P2P Notes
Jay Jaffe, who somehow seems to have inherited the Dodger job over at Baseball Prospectus, feeds us the following interesting tidbits:
- Clay Davenport translated the 2004 season of Japanese pickup 3B Norihiro Nakamura to a major league .261/.376/.379. Given that he'll be taking a 90% pay cut (and probably more if the U.S. dollar continues its slide against the yen), "Nakamura could be a handy pickup."
- Paul Bako looks to be a "portable vortex of suck" in the lineup. Jaffe likes David Ross to improve (~10 VORP), but also notes news reports indicating the Rockies are ready to trade or release Charles Johnson after spring training. Johnson, a former Dodger, rejected a trade back to Los Angeles at the deadline last year. If released, whoever picks him up will only have to pay league minimum. PECOTA projects him to a 9.0 VORP season, and that's in Colorado.
Comments:
I'm not surprised. This dodgers.com story says he was originally drafted as a catcher, and brought a catcher's glove to spring training. I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to make the big club as an emergency catcher, a la Shawn Wooten of the Angels a few years ago.
