Pickoff Moves

Aaron Sele: Big Club Or Bust

Via Lookout Landing: Aaron Sele has declared his intention to make the big club or leave Seattle:
For Aaron Sele, he either makes the Mariners or takes a hike. Asked whether he would consider pitching in the minors if he didn't make the rotation, Sele said no.

"It's not what they want. It's not what I want," he said. "If that happens, I'll look for another job."

That being said, Sele felt good about his three innings of work. He allowed a two-run homer to Prince Fielder, son of slugger Cecil Fielder, then had two near-perfect innings.

"I was hit-and-miss today," Sele said. "But I'm feeling good. There's no pressure on me. I've got to get ready to pitch. I know what I have to do."

Oakland Clears Coliseum Lease Transfer To Wolff

Oakland cleared the transfer of the A's lease to new owner Lewis Wolff, says the San Francisco Chronicle. The only remaining obstacle to completing an ownership transfer is for the owners to vote on the change. The A's hope to have the vote completed by opening Day.

Wolff has made public his desire to move the team to a new baseball-only stadium in Oakland.

"Our goal is to do it in Oakland," Wolff said. "We need a new venue. We're concerned that if we can't produce a venue, we don't want to continue playing in this shared facility longer than we have to."

Penny Still Not Throwing Hard

The Times says Brad Penny still hasn't thrown hard, and is now likely to miss opening day.
Manager Jim Tracy conceded that starting the season on the disabled list was "becoming a realistic possibility" for Penny, and General Manager Paul DePodesta suggested the pitcher could sit out the first few weeks. Penny is recovering from a nerve injury in his right arm.

"If it means giving him an extra two or three weeks and he misses two or three starts," DePodesta said, "that's certainly something we'll look at it if it gives him a better chance of staying healthy the whole year."

Symphony In C Minus

In that same article: Paul Bako "is assured" of the backup job, but nobody else is assured of anything at the catcher position. Ross is 0-11, while Dioner Navarro has gotten on base six times in 11 at bats. DePodesta calls a trade for a catcher "unlikely".

OT: Fellowship!

If you haven't already, go see Fellowship!, the musical parody of the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. (Here's the LA Times review.) There were maybe 20 minutes when I wasn't laughing in the hour-and-a-half musical, whose numbers have an unbeatable, slapdash, borscht-belt hilarity to them. The cross-dressing -- which works equally in both directions -- is just divine, and the cast's enthusiasm for the material (80's metal ballad love song, in elvish! Gay cabaret! Tapdancing hobbits!) bubbles over through every gag. Held over through -- I think -- April, at the Met Theatre (1089 N. Oxford, LA; parking at the Earl Scheib around the corner on Santa Monica). Like the critic said, "Fly, you fools, to see Fellowship!"
