Angels 6, Dodgers 4

3rd Inning

Both Lackey and Weaver look really sharp, Lackey especially, tossing a beautiful curveball we didn't see much of last year. Lack came a little unglued in the third, giving up three runs, one on a hanging curve.

Steve Finley hits an RBI double into centerfield, and the idiots in the stands start to boo. As if the Dodgers even bothered to give him a serious offer.

Bottom 5th

Another 1-2-3 outing for Weaver, who's just cruising through the Angels lineup. Benji taps one moundward; by the time he arrives at first base, fans in the stands have made round trips to the concession stands. Lackey makes a lame swing at an 0-2 count slider way outside the zone and looks like he'd been caught spooning the principal's daughter in the high school phone closet.

Top 6th

Damn, Vlad can crush 'em. And that ball had some loft to it, too.

Bottom 6th

Guess they weren't ready for Shields' slurve. Talk about the bottom dropping out of a pitch! Man, he just made Bradley swish.

Top 7th

Weaver, shaken but still with stuff left, manages to get past the rabble part of the Angels' lineup, in order.

Bottom 7th

... and likewise Donnelly. Man, it's nice to see him in good form again.

The new Dodgers TV ads, morphing the old teams into the new, just plain rock. What an improvement over last year's bobblehead family!

Top 8th

Buddy Carlyle... que malo.

Top 9th

Can somebody please inform Dodger management that they've mixed the crowd noise up way too high?

Another crummy inning for Dodger pitching; Brazoban looks like he's earning the "the current Dodger most overrated by Dodger fans" tag. We also learn the Dodgers have purchased the contracts of pitchers Kelly Wunsch, Scott Erickson (blah blah blah hot wife blah blah blah), Steve Schmoll, and Buddy Carlyle, and reassign Mike Rose, Norihiro Nakamura, Edwards, and Ryan Rupe. Also making the team are D.J. Houlton and Jason Repko.

So, yeah, the Angels won. Nobody was awful, nobody was great, but I'd say both clubs are ready for the regular season, more or less.

Update: FWIW, a commenter at Halo's Heaven said something about Escobar being DL'd prior to the season starting. Oops. I assume that was overheard on the Angels feed, but Vinny didn't say anything.

Recap

Comments:
i am pretty certain you've answered this... in fact, i might've asked you this last year... so maybe you can put it in a FAQ or something, but who are you rooting for when it's angels vs. dodgers?

-vishal

Vishal -- I'm rooting for the pitchers.

Rhi--you're here!! Cool.

He roots for the pitchers, really. I can attest.

Vin wasn't saying much of anything of importance. In the late innings unrecognizable players were coming into the game left-and-right, and he was taking his sweet time putting names to faces. I suppose it’s pre-season for broadcasters too.

Either that, or Vinny has finally gone into his dotage on-air. Gotta love him, but the number of mistakes he makes in a given game is moving decidedly north lately.
