Gregg's Last Stand: Dodgers 6, Angels 2

Kevin Gregg has had a grand total of two games where he has not given up a run. Today, he surrendered a home run on the first pitch to Jason Phillips. With an incredibly tough three weeks coming up, the chances of the Angels seeing him again -- on the 25-man roster or not -- are pretty slim. It's sadly time to send him back down to AAA, and see who, if anyone else, can come up and replace him.

Other'n that -- the Angels sputtering offense continues to frustrate, and Finley and Cabrera head the list, but that's mostly because of their price tags. Have things deteriorated so much that Scioscia now has to resort to Figgins at cleanup?

The Dodgers actually weren't terrible offensively, despite the strong outing Byrd pitched; Choi, 0-4 in the 3-hole, did himself proud by having good at bats, and Drew managed a couple RBIs, his first since May 18 and doubling his previous two weeks' worth of work measured by that stat. The Dodgers, opposite the Angels, have a light schedule coming up this next three weeks or so. After successive three-game road trips to San Francisco (20-22) and Arizona (27-18), the Dodgers return home for an 11-game homestand in which they host the 19-22 Cubs, four against 20-23 Milwaukee, three against 20-22 Detroit, and three against 25-17 Minnesota. That is, most of the next three weeks will be against teams with losing records to date. It'll be a good time to put the current losing streak to bed.

Making it harder to win the division, of course, is the news that Odalis Perez will be sidelined on the 15-day DL; as mentioned earlier, Scott Erickson goes to the bullpen and Wilson Alvarez will get Perez's start against the Giants on Wednesday. No replacement for Perez has yet been named.
