It Would Please Rich, Anyway
Jim Callis on Jared Weaver signing with the Angels:
Andrew, Boston, MA: Hey Jim, What do you think the Yankees will do with their first pick (#17) in this year's draft? Peter Gammons mentioned that it is possible the Yankees will take Stephen Drew or Jered Weaver with that pick. What do you think?
Jim Callis: One of the reasons the Yankees system has gone into deep decline is that they haven't used their financial advantages in the draft. They're desperate for young blood as well as trade fodder, so it would make lots of sense to get the best player available, regardless of his asking price. Drew and Weaver are possibilities, though I can't imagine the Yankees (or anyone) giving them more than they've already been offered. My gut feeling is Drew (Diamondbacks) and Weaver (Angels) sign before the 2005 draft.
Comments:
Why is it that all the national writers seem to think that Weaver and Drew are going to sign while all the local writers seem to have written them off?
I'm trying to figure out if it's because the national guys know something the local guys don't know (or vice versa), or if it's just an institutional thing (e.g., local writers more willing to listen to posturing of hometown team's management).
