A Note On The Competence Of Mets GM Omar Minaya

Via BTF:
CHICAGO - Victor Zambrano’s days in the rotation could be numbered, and with Kaz Ishii showing progress in Port St. Lucie, the Mets may have some serious decisions to make as early as next week.
So let me get this straight… Scott Kazmir was traded for guy who can’t beat out Kaz Ishii? The Rick needs to be shown the door, if he can’t work his home cooking on Zamrbano. Do you ever wonder if the Mets thought they had dialed the Cubs? And when they were told they could have Zambrano for Kazmir they thought they were getting the good one? That joke was probably already made though.
Update: It appears that (1) I was misremembering who made the Kazmir trade (Jim Duquette, as Richard points out in the comments, and (2) confusing it with Omar Minaya, the current Mets GM who did in fact trade for Ishii. However, given the relative success of Jason Phillips (.297/.340/.440 for a catcher) and Kaz Ishii (0-2 4.82 ERA, 6.75 K/9, 1.08 K/BB, on the DL for a strained lat), I still stand by my assessment of Minaya's relative abilities. Even with the addition of an (at most) $3.05M tranfer, that still means the Dodgers have a good-hitting catcher under their control for at least another year.

Comments:
That was a Duquette master-stroke, wasn't it? Minaya came in this offseason.

The trade for Ishii was done under Minaya's watch. Dan Duquette was the former incompetent GM of the Red Sox; the former incompetent GM of the Mets was Steve Phillips, who is now dispensing his pearls of wisdom on ESPN.

The Victor Zambrano and Kris Benson moves were orchestrated by former scouting-guru Jim Duquette, who became GM after Phillips was sacked.

Ah, right you are.
