Pickoff Moves

Astros 9, Giants 0

Losing a game to another division leader? Sucky.
Seeing your principle division rival get blown out by a bottom-dwelling Astros? Not so sucky.

Really, this was a laugher all the way through for the 'Stros, who cruised through it. In particular, last year's postseason hero Brandon Backe made it look almost easy.

San Francisco goes to 18-19 on the loss, four games back of the division-leading Diamondbacks.

Yankees 6, Athletics 4

On the one hand, of course you want your division rivals to do poorly; the name of the game is to win more games than the other guys. On the other hand, if you're playing in the stooge division, your fate is certain death once you get into the postseason. With second-place Texas still only two games over .500 (20-18), the AL West is maybe taking over the AL Central as the worst division in the league.

Dan Haren gave up four runs and ten hits in 6.0 IP; Ricardo Rincon lost the game with the two earned runs he surrendered. The Yankee victory marks a sweep of the A's at home. Oakland falls to last place in the AL West at 14-23, seven games out of first.

Recap

Brandon Wood Lighting Up The Cal League

2003 first-round pick Brandon Wood went 3-4 in a game against the San Jose Giants, homering twice and driving home three in the 4-3 victory. Wood's hitting .317/.359/.683 in 145 AB; with his two homers in today's game, he now has 15 on the year.

So then there's hope for Sean Rodriguez. Maybe it's just something about Cedar Rapids that makes it tough for shortstops to hit (cool stadium, though).

It looks like the NL Central is becoming the weak sister division in the NL, what with the Cubs and Astros falling into the doldrums of mediocrity.

The NL West might not be that far behind -- nobody can have any real hope that the Giants will be any good at this point, and while the D-Backs continue to spit in the face of their Pythageorean record, that just can't last...can it?

Huh? If Bonds and Schmidt come back and are even mildly competent compared to their former selves, I'd say they have a legitimate shot at the division.
