Sweep: Angels 5, Mariners 2

After yesterday's game, I almost thought better of writing about Beltre's cold start; you never know when somebody will come back and kill you, and after Beltre's 2004, it could happen. Byrd wasn't impressive, giving up nine hits in 6.2 IP (sorry, Halofan, but WHIP is not "horseshit"). A win's a win, yadda yadda, and today's -- giving the Halos a sweep -- was better than most therefore.

Josh Paul may miss a few days because of a jammed thumb; they'll watch him later in the week, and tap into the club's depth in the minors if need be. Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis and Ryan Budde are all candidates (and the fact that Mathis is on the short list should tell you what they think of Napoli). That isn't to say they'll move Benjie back to the active roster with unnecessary haste. Regardless, there's still too many guys below the Mendoza line for me to feel comfortable with the Angels' offense right now. According to the Register, the Angels are considering putting Paul on the DL, which would give Robb Quinlan a reprieve from being demoted, though he's not seeing much playing time anyway; his last game was in Minnesota, and given his .138/.167/.241, it's hard to avoid noticing that he's not exactly doing well. A pat on the back and a demotion to AAA might be the best thing for him now. The same applies for David Matranga.

In that same article: Lou Merloni is out for the year, more or less. He tore a ligament in his right ankle, and won't be back for 4-6 months.

Dan Wilson, the M's reserve catcher, now caught the knee disease and will appear on the team's 60-day DL. But it doesn't matter; the U.S.S. Mariner cynics think the team could be slain right now by any competent AAA lefty, now that they're hitting .204/.263/.290 against.
