Games, Games, Games
White Sox 8, Padres 5
Recalling Jay Jaffe's recent comments about the wildness of the NL West, the Padres' pen uncharacteristically exploded when Scott Linebrink and Trevor Hoffman blew up for a combined five earned runs (two on Linebrink, three on closer Hoffman). Hoffman put two men on and surrendered a pinch-hit homer to Aaron Rowand, sinking the Pads; adding to the indignity, Hoffman had to be relieved by Dennis Reyes. Otsuka got tagged for the loss, Hoffman's ERA has bloated to 4.43, and the Padres slip to a mere 2.5 games ahead of the Dodgers. In losing the series to the White Sox, the Padres are 3-8 in June after a 22-6 May.Indians 5, Giants 3
The Giants had better get Barry Bonds back, and quick; with today's loss (and a sweep at the hands of the Indians), they're ten games out of first. That's not to say they can't recover; there's still a lot of baseball yet to be played, but as they say, it's getting awfully late awfully early around here. The Giants have yet to win a series this month, but there's more wrong with this club than just Bonds' absence; with Schmidt still badly wrong and not much else going right for the club (El Lefty Malo reports on two more middle relievers, Jim Brower and former Angel Al Levine, rumored to be thrown out the car window), wild experimentation begins. How Sabean responds to this crisis will be interesting, as he's a fairly unconventional GM, usually good at getting value from older players other clubs have shied away from.A's 11, Braves 5
A complete clobbering of the Braves by Oakland, it's good to look at this to remind the reading audience that Eric Chavez has finally returned to the major leagues. 5-5 with four RBIs, Chavez is hitting .436/.522/.974 on the month; the A's, 6-5 on the month.Rangers 6, Marlins 2
The Marlins, who have flopped around this month like their namesake fish on the deck of a boat, locked up a series win last night against the Rangers. To stave off the sweep, the Rangers pulled the old "rookie starter you've never seen before" trick on the Fish, who promptly slid into the depths. Ricardo Rodriguez, 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA for the Rangers last year, surrendered two earned runs. Journeyman reliever John Wasdin pitched the remaining four innings in scoreless relief.Royals 9, Diamondbacks 4
Wha-wha-what? The Snakes lose a series to the lowly Royals? The Royals, you say, are 7-4 in June? Glaus, hitting .250/.340/.318 in June? A lousy relief appearance from a reliever (Greg Aquino) blowing the game? Man, does that ever sound familiar.Newer› ‹Older
