GBL's Long Beach Armada Opening Day Festivities

There's been a lot going on in the Golden Baseball League that I haven't written about, partly because the season hasn't started and I assumed -- incorrectly -- that the amount of news would be fairly thin leading up to that. Belatedly:

The Long Beach Armada -- the team closest to me -- plays their home opener at Blair Field on Monday against the Japan Samurai Bears, the league's traveling team. Former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley and Yoshio Nomoto, Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles, will take part in first pitch ceremonies. The Armada are 5-9 already; the Bears, 2-9.

It hasn't been two weeks on the season yet, but Long Beach has already sold its first player to the bigs. 23-year-old, 6'7" Nathan Pudewell was acquired by the Atlanta Braves yesterday.
“Nate is one of the hardest throwers in the league with a heavy fastball that just destroys hitters” said Jon Warden, Long Beach Armada pitching coach and former member of the Detroit Tigers 1968 World Championship Team, “It was a real pleasure working with him and watching his development as a pitcher the last two months. I’m looking forward to seeing him in a big league uniform some day.”
Nate is the fifth GBL player to sign with a major league team since the league's inception. Indy league ball has started to catch up with the affiliated organizations in developing major league talent; too bad it had to happen before I caught my first Armada game.

For more info, see the Armada's website.
