The Good That Vlad Does

You've probably read it all before, but it's nice to see that he's genuinely concerned about his neighbors.
Only two main streets are paved in Don Gregorio, located in a hilly region 40 miles southwest of the capital, Santo Domingo. With jobs scarce, dozens of young men rent motorbikes at $3 a day and shuttle housewives on their errands for 25 cents a fare. Like a lot of Dominican towns, Don Gregorio is rich in baseball talent and kids learn early how to spot big leaguers. "Juan Uribe," they yell, as the Chicago White Sox infielder zooms by.

"Vladdy" Guerrero, whose formal education ended in fifth grade, is Don Gregorio's most celebrated export. In 2004, after signing a $70 million contract with the Angels, he batted .337 and hit 39 home runs, carrying his team to their first division title in 18 years. In November, he was named the American League's Most Valuable Player. During the off-season, a steady stream of petitioners comes calling. "Every major leaguer hears the same thing: What can you do for me?" shrugs Mr. Guerrero.
