Pickoff Moves, Post-Lunchtime Edition

Giants Release Brower, Mull Other Moves

The Giants released RHP Jim Brower after a home sweep by Cleveland, and Sabean makes noises of other changes to come:
"The deals we will be looking for is for someone coming here who has a future," Sabean said. "Given the circumstances, we're going to be open to anything."
This is nuts; either the team is in "win now" mode or it's not, and you have to believe it's the former. Principally, what they need is a starter, with Giants starters failing to chart six innings in 11 of the last 15 games.

K-Rod Kisses Winter Ball Goodbye

The Angels and Francisco Rodriguez have agreed that he won't play Venezuelan winter ball any more.
"I'm not going to do anything to jeopardize my career," Rodriguez said. "It's tough, because my family doesn't get a chance to see me pitch here, so it's important for me to pitch in Venezuela. But I can't do it anymore."

...

"Winter ball helped me get ready for the season," Rodriguez said. "I could get my pitches to where I wanted them and be sharp when the season started. But they don't want me to do it, so I won't. I don't want to get hurt again."

The World (Series) Is Not Enough

Theo Epstein, now succumbing to the pressure to repeat... again... and again... by the notoriously savage Boston press, wonders what to do about a languishing Red Sox club with a 5.08 ERA in its starting rotation.
"This is my fault. The guys have to play better or we've got to make some changes. I think we've allowed something like (77) runs in our last 10 losses. We're out of games. It's time for changes. Soon," Epstein told The Boston Herald.
The Red Sox are three games behind division leading Baltimore.
