Donnelly Suspended Ten Games, Robinson, Scioscia One Game Apiece

Via Richard, Brendan Donnelly has been suspended ten games. Classless jerk Frank Robinson and Hero of the People Mike Scioscia were also suspended a game (though what for, they don't say). Robinson and Donnelly will appeal their suspensions; Scioscia will serve his tonight.

Speaking Of Donnelly...

It has been commented upon before that Donnelly's suspension will force Scioscia to use Peralta more. But it's time we looked at the motivation behind the act that ultimately caused Donnelly's suspension. This is the third time (going to his mouth on the mound, carrying a spare baseball while pitching) he's done something weird this year that could be construed as cheating. Allow me to suggest that this amounts to circumstantial evidence that Brendan Donnelly is nearing the end of his career. (The direct evidence is his 4.34 ERA.) He knows this and, having spent so much of his career in the minors, is now looking for every and any advantage he can get -- including illegal ones. If Donnelly becomes this year's Ben Weber, well, thanks for the memories, Brendan.

(Incidentally, I would suggest that there's a distinction to be made between "cheating" -- i.e., finding a way to throw an illegal spitter -- and using a different substance to get a better grip on the ball. Pine tar is unlikely to affect the ball save that it gives Donnelly a better grip. Regardless, that's what the rosin bag is for, n'est pas?)

And with that, I bid you all fond good night, as I'm heading to the game tonight with all the usual suspects, including the good Rev., Rich and, incredibly, Sean. Laters.

Comments:
You guys picked a hell of a game to go to. I look forward to your accounts.

Of course, there's the slight detail that, by allowing Donnelly to get a better grip on the ball, it lets him throw it better, thereby affecting the flight of the ball.

And this is different how from the rosin bag? See above. Doctoring the ball is one thing; getting a better grip is completely different.

Oh, to be sure. I don't know if Beane will have much up his sleeve this midterm or not; he didn't do anything last year. But I think all the Beane-booers have missed the point on the 2004/2005 offseason trades; he never expected them to work out right away anyhow.
