Roster Moves
- The A's signed first-round pick Cliff Pennington, with a bonus of $1.45M.
- The Rangers DFA'd right-handed starter Ryan Drese. Drese was 4-6 with an 6.36 ERA (the ESPN newswire report differs from Drese's ESPN player page) after his abysmal 2.2 IP in yesterday's blowout against the Phillies in which he surrendered five earned runs. Also, RHP reliever Ron Mahay went on the DL with a groin injury. They will be replaced by RHP Nick Regilio, promoted from AAA Oklahoma, and reserve OF Gary Matthews, Jr..
Update: Drese was claimed off waivers by the Nationals, who traded Korean RHP Tomo Ohka to the Brewers for 2B Junior Spivey. Drese has had problems spotting his sinker this year; moving to one of the most extreme pitcher's parks in the National League won't hurt.
- Former Dodger Mike Piazza left a game early with a bruised wrist. He is listed as day-to-day.
- Jeff DaVanon's nose was set; he will wear a cast four or five days. Escobar continues to report pain from his elbow. I second the Rev's recommendation of immediate surgery followed by a late August return.
