Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition
Forget Thumbsucker, This Is Red Meat
When the SABR-guys can start measuring ill-defined concepts like "heart", maybe then I'll understand paying a guy like -3.3 VORP Pat Borders to be on a major league roster. Eckstein has some value, but unforgivably larding his list with elite pitcher Livan Hernandez is just shameful; why couldn't you have gone with, say, Sergio Mitre, Jeff Weaver, or any of two dozen mediocre starting pitchers with a ton of innings under their belts? The answer is that he's a freelance writer on a deadline and this is what you expect. Blech.UTK Quick Hits
Not much in today's UTK, but it looks like --- Dallas McPherson will be back after the minimum.
- The Padres' Ramon Hernandez is playing injured, and surgery will ultimately be required. Whether he can hang on to the end of the season is anybody's guess.
- Barry Bonds is running again.
Giants Closer Closer To Returning?
The Giants think closer Armando Benitez may come back earlier than scheduled. Surgeons needed to surgically reattach two tendons to his pelvis, and he was supposed to be out for four months. Now they think he could be back before his projected late September return date. The Giants also got good news about CF Marquis Grissom and 3B Edgardo Alfonso, both of whom could rejoin the club by Saturday.
Dayn Perry's Free-Agent-Free Look At The Dodgers
Sure, Dayn, DePodesta had little to do with the injuries that the Dodgers have had. Surprisingly, we even kind of agree on the relative merits of the Hee Seop Choi/Olmedo Saenz platoon at first. But what I don't get is that he doesn't even look at the Derek Lowe acquisition (which has been a bust so far) nor the Odalis Perez re-signing. Though OP's problems were injury-related, it's not as though he didn't have shoulder trouble before, either.BA's Prospect Hot Sheet
Three Angels appear on this week's Prospect Hot Sheet, and I probably don't need to tell you two of those names are Kendrick and Wood, in order 2 and 1 respectively. The surprise is Jered Weaver at number six:After not pitching for over a year, it was understandable that Weaver would be a little rusty at first, but with 39 strikeouts and five walks in 26 innings, the 2004 first-round pick is looking like he might be worth the wait. Scouts worried about his ability to get lefties out, and so far, that concern remains as lefties are batting .286 off him, as compared to .192 for righties. Two Dodger prospects appear in the "In The Team Photo" section: OF Matt Kemp and 3B Andy LaRoche.
