Pickoff Moves
Angels 5, Royals 0
Is anybody else glad the Angels caught the Royals after they fell back to earth? There is maybe something to catching teams when they're on a streak, as the Yankees found out when they found themselves swept by the Royals on June 2. Byrd's turning out to be, if not the number two I thought he could be, at least a very solid 3-4 guy. The Angels have been tossing complete games like politicians make campaign promises before an election (a grand total of five, tied for third in the majors with the Chisox), and this is Byrd's second. Not only that, but he limited the club to a two-hit outing that would have been a three-hitter except for a batting out of turn violation that erased David DeJesus's single.You gotta beat the bad teams, and unlike the Dodgers, the Angels are getting the job done.
Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 0
The Snakes have been slumping lately, which is no surprise, because everyone in the NL West slumped in June:
Team June Record ============================ Padres 10-17 Diamondbacks 9-19 Dodgers 11-16 Giants 10-17 Rockies 12-15
(Incidentally, how weird is it that the NL West team with the best record in June is the Rockies?) So we're back to the stooge division, and the ongoing battle of the bad teams. I didn't see this one, but damned if it wasn't nice to hear that the Dodgers had managed to get a shutout of the Snakes (on an eight-inning effort by Brad Penny), especially with a homer from AAAA guy Mike Edwards.
Corrigendum
Dallas McPherson's seven-second popup in the recent Dodgers contest actually flew 196 feet in the air, not 392. It turns out there was a constant 1/2 missing (thanks to the integration of terms). My bad for not looking this up, and thanks to those who wrote in with their corrections.Rogers Files Appeal
Kenny Rogers filed an appeal through the union; he will continue pitching before his appeal is heard. Frankly, given all the crazy things going on, I'd just shut up and take it like a man if I were him. Drop this comment by Rangers shortstop Michael Young under the realpolitik file:Any suspension of this length is definitely going to hurt our club because Kenny is our best pitcher. We're all going to stick by Kenny.And I'm sure he was planning on sticking by you when he punched that watercooler. Sheesh.
M's Recall Spiezio From Rehab Stint
The Mariners recalled Scott Spiezio after a rehab stint at AAA Tacoma. OF Jose Lopez was sent back down to the minors to make room on the 25-man roster. C Wiki Gonzalez was activated after a DL assignment and was optioned to Tacoma.Newer› ‹Older
