Alvarez Considering Retirement

In this Register article on the Dodgers (principally focusing on the absence of trade deadline moves), we learn that Wilson Alvarez may retire:
Veteran left-hander Wilson Alvarez did not travel with the team to Washington. The Dodgers have declined to comment, but Alvarez is believed to have told DePodesta after Sunday's game that he was considering retirement rather than continuing to pitch with a frayed labrum in his pitching shoulder.
This is the first I've heard Alvarez has a frayed labrum. I know he's had shoulder troubles before, but always thought it was tendinitis. (Looking back at the team injury list, his injury is listed as a "shoulder impingement".)

MLB.com has a slightly differing version of the same story, saying Alvarez will rehab the shoulder and retire at the end of the season, forfeiting the $2M guaranteed him next year.

"I've been doing so many exercises this year, it's getting old, but I want to finish it out competing and pitching," he said. "I've been thinking about it a lot the last two weeks. I've thought about stopping now. But this organization gave me a chance to be somebody again. The organization has been so good to me and the fans and the city have treated me so good. So when I walk away, I have to do it the right way."

Alvarez's problems cropped up early this year. Trying to catch up after missing a few spring workouts with the flu, he threw too many pitches in an intrasquad game and developed tendinitis. He started the season on the disabled list, was activated May 3, but was disabled again May 31. He came back again July 19, but has been ineffective.

Comments:
Okay, that's nice of him to consider retiring and forfeiting his cash. But...

If the Dodgers knew/know about his problems, would somebody please... Please... Explain to me why Jim Tracy keeps asking him to pitch?

Well, if you can find someone who can explain any of Jim Tracy's decisions, give me a call. I'd love to know about a few more of them...
