Minor League Scorebook
- Troy Percival and Terry Francona were inducted into the Arizona Fall League Hall of Fame.
- Rancho Cucamonga's Jesse Smith in the Cal League and Ogden's David Pfeiffer in the Pioneer League won Pitcher of the Week honors in their respective leagues.
- An interview piece with Dodgers prospect Russ Mitchell, who got demoted to Pioneer League Ogden after less-than-successful stints in the GCL and Vero Beach.
"(Dodgers' director of player development) Terry Collins asked me to come here and play every day," Mitchell said. "I understand what goes on in an organization and they just want me to play every day, get at-bats and get the chance to play instead of being the backup at Vero Beach or Columbus. That's fine with me. You still have to hit and throw wherever you play. It's still baseball.
- The Angels announced Brandon Wood Player of the Month for July, Joe Saunders Pitcher of the Month (he has subsequently been promoted to AAA Salt Lake), and OF Tommy Murphy Defensive Player of the Month.
- Update 8/2: Here's an milb.com article on Dodgers prospect Adam Godwin, who narrowly missed being struck by lightning.
- Finally, if I ever find myself lacking for traffic, all I need do is publish some sort of sex scandal or other involving a player. This has to be some kind of record for single-day traffic.
2005-08-01: Salt Lake 1, Round Rock 12
Kotchman: 1-4
Gorneault: 1-4
Mathis: 1-3
Matranga: 2-4
Cyr: (L, 4-3), 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.64 ERA
Borbon: 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 6.75 ERA
Woods: 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 8.10 ERA
Brian Tollberg
Pedro Borbon, Jr.'s two earned runs were his first since signing a minor league contract with the Angels.
In semi-related news, BA's Daily Dish noted the promotion of Stephen Drew to AA. Juvenile, pointless taunting aimed toward the Diamondbacks follows: Nyah, nyah, nyah, our expensive, first-round pick and Boras client beat yours to the next level. (By a week. Whee.)
2005-08-01: High Desert 5, Rancho Cucamonga 2
Dowdy: (L, 2-2), 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 4.90 ERA
Buckley: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.57 ERA
Collins: 0-4, 1 RBI
Toussaint: 2-5, 2 RBI
Leblanc: 3-5, 3 RBI
Rodriguez, S: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Ray: (W, 5-3), 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 4.14 ERA
Mount: 0-2, 2 BB
McPherson: 1-3, 1 RBI
Johnson: 2-4, 1 RBI
Adenhart: 3.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 6.16 ERA
Cassevah: (W, 2-4) (in relief), 3.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.68 ERA
Beck: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1.06 ERA
Freakin' finally: Is it just me, or is anyone else concerned that McPherson isn't wrecking pitchers at this low level? Gotta start somewhere, I guess. Not such a good game for Adenhart or Cassevah, either.
Check out that attendance of 26. Heh. Stephen Smith says the ASL is now on a night schedule as of July 30, which seems to be affecting their ability to transmit scores in a timely manner.
Boyer: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 RBI
Marek: (L, 0-2), 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 4.41 ERA
Morillo: 1.2 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.43 ERA
Whittington: 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 3.12 ERA
Young, D: 1-5, 1 RBI
Aybar: 3-5, 1 RBI
Chen: 3-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Ross: 3-4, 2 RBI
Totten: 3.1 IP, 8 ER, 7.12 ERA
Neu: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 4.50 ERA
From Baseball America's Daily Dish column we learn (and I should have noted on Saturday) that Delwyn Young got promoted to AAA Las Vegas over the weekend, and so far has a three-game hitting streak.
Update 8/2: Heath Totten was a 2000 draftee, and after a solid half-season in 2002 in Jacksonville, he looked primed to go up the depth charts. But in repeating that level in 2003, he posted mediocre primary numbers (11-12, 3.42 ERA) and a mediocre strikeout rate (5.66 K/9) despite excellent control (6.71 K/BB). He's walking a lot more guys lately (2.54 K/BB in 2005) since moving to Las Vegas; he also tested positive for steroids back in May. With 12.94 and 11.92 H/9 rates this year and last (respectively), he's sliding in the wrong direction.
2005-08-01: Vero Beach did not play
Dewitt: 1-5
Westervelt: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Batz: 2-3, 1 RBI
Elbert: 3.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.10 ERA
Johnson, B: (W, 9-3) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.16 ERA
Paredes: (W, 4-0), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.16 ERA
Ramon Paredes has a 27/6 K/BB ratio in 33.1 IP and five starts. Not enough to get a good read on just yet, but he might turn into something.
Soto: 2-6
Sutherland: 2-5, 3 RBI
Richmond: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Locke: 2-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Rivera: 0-4
Troncoso: (W, 4-1) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 2.84 ERA
