Minor League Scorebook

Note: no major league game recaps today, we have guests over and I wanted to get this out first. Sometime tomorrow. See you then.

2005-08-05: Memphis 8, Salt Lake 11

Callaspo, A: 2-4
Gorneault: 2-3, 2 BB
Allen: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 RBI
Mathis: 1-4, 3 RBI
Sorensen: 2-4, 1 RBI
Specht: 1-3, 2 BB, 2 RBI
Pavkovich: 3-5, 1 RBI
Thomas: (W, 5-2), 7.0 IP, 8 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 7.69 ERA
Evan Thomas was in the Phillies' system for seven years, spent a year with Toronto, bounced to indy ball in Camden, and pitched a while for Cleveland. His ERA on this day is indicative of the kinds of results you might expect from someone like that.

Everybody got a hit except for leadoff man Chris Prieto, and even he got a walk. Just an offensive explosion against Adam Wainwright, who absorbed nine earned runs. And now you know why BA rated the Cards the worst farm system in the minors.

2005-08-05: Springfield 0, Arkansas 15
Aybar, E: 3-4, 2 BB, 3 RBI
Kendrick, H: 2-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Murphy: 2-5, 4 RBI
Napoli, M: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Morales, K: 1-5
Porter: 2-4
Eylward: 3-5, 1 RBI
Aspito: 2-4, 1 RBI
Davidson: (W, 11-5), 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 4.11 ERA
It was definitely happy stick night at the upper levels of the Angels minors tonight. What was it I was saying about how bad the Cards' system was? Oh, yeah. Really bad. Reliever Jeremy Cook took the brunt of the damage, with six earned runs over one inning of work, but right behind him was the onomatopoetically named Kevin Ool, who squirted out five earned runs on six hits over two innings. Ool, probably the apotheosis of "rushed rookie", has gone up two straight levels this year, and appears to have met his match in the Texas League.

Surprisingly, the Travs only homered twice, a two-run shot by Howie Kendrick (his third for Arkansas), and a solo shot by Mike Napoli (his 22nd). Even fresh -- fresh, as in today -- callup from Orem Jose Caldera got a pinch hit in his only at bat, and thus has a 1.000 average so far this year. This outburst was the Travs' highest-scoring game all year. Over their last six games, the Travs have outscored their opponents 67-21.

Daniel Davidson held down the Springfield offense, scattering seven hits on six strikeouts and one walk.

One last note, this time a slightly personal one, before I leave Arkansas. My sister-in-law and her youngest son are in town and visiting this week. He has the peculiar distinction of having never seen any sports team lose whose game he is attending in person. Being he is in Little Rock, he has seen the Travs win quite a bit this year. We are going to tomorrow's Angels game, and expect not to have that run broken.

2005-08-05: Rancho Cucamonga 6, Inland Empire 7
Sugden: 2-6
McPherson: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Johnson: 3-5, 1 RBI
Fuller: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Edwards: 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 4.17 ERA
Buckley: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.36 ERA
Zimmermann: (BS, 5), 0.2 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 3.80 ERA
Thompson: (L, 4-8) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.09 ERA
Aside from what you see here, D-Mac struck out twice against single-A pitching, an indicator that he's got a ways to go before he's ready to face major leaguers again.
2005-08-05: Cedar Rapids 4, Southwest Michigan 3
Sutton: 2-4, 1 RBI
Toussaint: 2-3
Green: 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA
Simard: (W, 7-7) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 5.96 ERA
Green: as many hits (59) as innings pitched (59.1), though he's got a nice 35/10 K/BB ratio. Miss more bats, kid.
2005-08-05: AZL Angels 0, AZL Rangers 2 (missing line score)
Infante: 0-2, 2 BB
Mount: 1-2, 2 BB
Ryan: 2-3

Mendoza: (L, 2-1) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.16 ERA
2005-08-05: Orem 0, Idaho Falls 10
Trumbo: 0-3
Mosebach: (L, 2-3), 2.0 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 5.40 ERA
Whittington: 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3.10 ERA

Young, D: 2-4, 1 RBI
Grabowski: 1-5, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Myrow: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Ross: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Stults: (W, 2-3), 5.2 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 5.79 ERA
Speaking of bad systems, have I mentioned the Royals? Ryan Jensen, the 51's opponent tonight, actually had a stint with the parent club this year, and the 7.11, 3-2 record to prove it.
2005-08-05: Jacksonville 1, Mobile 4
Abreu, T: 1-4
Martin, R: 0-3
LaRoche, A: 0-2
Guzman, J: 0-2
Loney: 2-4
Billingsley: (L, 8-6), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 11 K, 1 BB, 4.33 ERA
Woo hoo! What a great effort from Billingsley. Too bad about the walk and the home run, though.

Dunlap: 2-5, 2 RBI
