Minor League Scorebook

2005-08-13: Salt Lake 6, Tacoma 7
Callaspo, A: 2-5
Quinlan: 2-4, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 RBI
Pride: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 RBI
Sorensen: 0-3, 2 BB
Pavkovich: 0-2, 2 BB
Hunter: (L, 0-1), 5.1 IP, 6 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 4.60 ERA
A messy loss for the Stingers; I was surprised to see Quinlan catapulted all the way up the ladder to AAA, but here he is and 2-4 with an RBI the result. If you want a really detailed review of this game from someone who was there, swing by Lookout Landing and check out Devin's liveblogging. The game appears to have been actually very one-sided until the ninth, when Clint Nageotte -- rated BA's fourth-best prospect in the M's system -- exploded for five runs. Masao Kida (remember him, Dodger fans?) had to come in to restore order. Jesse Foppert, a former Giants farmhand, got the start but only pitched one inning for the Rainiers.
2005-08-13: Arkansas 2, Frisco 3
Aybar, E: 0-4
Willits, R: 1-3
Kendrick, H: 2-4, 1 RBI
Napoli, M: 0-2, 2 BB
Morales, K: 0-3
Gates: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Shell: 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 8 H, 8 K, 2 BB, 4.35 ERA
Austen: (L, 3-2) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.98 ERA
A very good game -- if you can overlook those hits -- by Shell. Organizational pitcher Tim Crabtree got the win for Frisco. Amazingly, Morales did not post a single strikeout.
2005-08-13: Rancho Cucamonga 8, Modesto 4
Peel, A: 3-4, 1 RBI
Wood, B: 1-4, 1 RBI
Wilson: 1-5, 3 RBI
Johnson: 2-5, 1 RBI
Smith: (W, 7-6), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 4.55 ERA
Buckley: 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.15 ERA
Five of Rancho's twelve hits were doubles, with Bobby Wilson the big RBI hero.
2005-08-13: Kane County 5, Cedar Rapids 2
Rodriguez, S: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Collins: 0-3
Toussaint: 0-3
Madrigal: 1-3
Rodriguez, F: 7.2 IP, 2 ER, 4.23 ERA
Simard: (BS, 1)(L, 7-8) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.85 ERA
2005-08-13: AZL Angels did not play
2005-08-13: Billings 4, Orem 0 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
Trumbo: 0-2
Overstreet: 0-1, 2 BB
Hawkins: (L, 3-2), 4.1 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.54 ERA
2005-08-13: Billings 5, Orem 3 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)
Trumbo: 2-4
Hughes: 0-0, 3 BB
Whittington: 4.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 2.55 ERA
Wilson: (L, 1-4) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 4 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 6.41 ERA
Whittington just plain struggled in this game and appears to have gotten pulled early. BA says he had an obscene workload as a prep pitcher, like Arthur Rhodes, and he's incredibly raw. Not sure how much that factored in to tonight's abbreviated outing.
2005-08-13: Tucson 4, Las Vegas 8
Flores: 3-4, 3 RBI
Young, D: 3-5, 1 RBI
Aybar: 0-3
Chen: 2-3, 2 BB
Eckert: 4.1 IP, 2 ER, 5.63 ERA
Carlyle: (W, 1-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 6.19 ERA
I keep expecting to find Buddy Carlyle released by the Dodgers, but maybe they figure he's got some life in him. He'd better hurry up in discovering it; at 27 he's drifting into "suspect".
2005-08-13: West Tenn 1, Jacksonville 6
Donovan, T: 3-5, 1 RBI
Abreu, T: 0-5
Weber, J: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 RBI
Meadows: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 RBI
Loney: 1-4, 2 RBI
Martin, R: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Garcia: 2-4
Jackson: (W, 6-4), 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 3.39 ERA
Miller: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
MILB.com featured this game, noting it was the Suns' ninth straight victory. I don't find Jackson's four strikeouts especially impressive, but let's call this a step toward his rediscovering the form that got him a callup in the first place. Another good outing by Greg Miller, too.
2005-08-13: Palm Beach 12, Vero Beach 7
Paul: 1-6
Hu: 1-4
Raglani: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Kemp: 4-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Dunlap: 1-3, 2 BB, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Denker, T: 3-5, 1 RBI
Figueroa: 3.0 IP, 6 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 5.47 ERA
Bott: 3.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 9 K, 2 BB, 4.50 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (L, 8-2) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 5 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2.33 ERA
A great night for Matt Kemp. Here's a Ventura County Star story about him:
The 20-year-old outfielder is hitting .297 and has driven in 74 runs for the Vero Beach Dodgers, and was recently named Florida State League Player of the Month.

"I was surprised because there are a lot of good players in this league," said Kemp, who entered the weekend second in the league in home runs with 23.

...

"I am willing to do anything it takes to get to where I want to go and that is in the big leagues in L.A.," said Kemp, who has never been to California. "I am trying to get down there and join y'all."

2005-08-13: Columbus 2, Charleston 0
Dewitt: 1-4
Westervelt: 0-2, 2 BB
Pedroza: 3-4, 2 RBI
Plummer: (W, 4-2), 7.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.30 ERA
2005-08-13: GCL Dodgers 2, GCL Mets 5 (Completed Early: Rain)
Perez: 3-4
Robinson: 2-3
Dasni: (L, 0-4), 2.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 6.87 ERA
Paris: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 4.78 ERA
2005-08-13: Great Falls 9, Ogden 3
Taloa: 2-4, 1 RBI
Arias, M: (L, 3-2), 4.2 IP, 7 ER, 10 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.47 ERA
Horlacher: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1.50 ERA
In the Catfish game above, Plummer struck out a measely three batters over 7.1 IP; I don't trust guys in the minors with K/9 rates much under 9.00. You hope for good things, on the other hand, with guys like Horlacher, who's just knocking them dead so far, in a very small number of innings.
