Minor League Scorebook
Before I start:
2005-08-15: Southwest Michigan 8, Cedar Rapids 3
2005-08-15: Vero Beach did not play
2005-08-15: Columbus 6, Charleston 7
- Travis Denker and Mark Alexander have been named Dodgers system Pitcher of the Month and Player of the Month for July, in case you didn't see it.
- Also of interest: the Chronicler has up his semi-monthly Watch List, whereupon we discover Baltazar Lopez (slight misspelling there, C) has fallen off. Gotta hit, Balt.
- Finally, I forgot to mention Stephen Smith has a review of some of the more prominent players in the Angels system.
2005-08-15: Salt Lake 1, Tacoma 2
Callaspo, A: 0-3
Quinlan: 3-3
Thomas: (L, 5-4), 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 7.27 ERA
Tough luck for the Travs tonight, as the M's AAA club squeaked past the Stingers. Former Giants prospect Jesse Foppert started for the Rainiers, but only pitched one inning, striking out one and walking two. Foppert is a former top prospect whose star dimmed when he needed Tommy John surgery and came back throwing slower than before. But with that operation, it sometimes takes a while to come back.
2005-08-15: Midland 10, Arkansas 6Quinlan: 3-3
Thomas: (L, 5-4), 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 7.27 ERA

Cha Baek got the win in relief, pitching 6.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Aybar, E: 1-5

Kendrick, H: 2-6, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Murphy: 0-4, 2 BB
Morales, K: 1-4, 1 RBI
Aspito: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Austen: (L, 3-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 4 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 4.81 ERA
Home runs from Howie Kendrick and Jason Aspito couldn't overcome Arkansas' weak pitching; Midland won it by scoring four times in the twelfth. Reggie Willits' RBI double tied the game in the ninth.

Madrigal: 0-3
Gelinas: (L, 7-8), 4.1 IP, 6 ER, 11 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 4.44 ERA
Mutter: 2.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3.18 ERA
Three Devil Ray pitchers kept the Kernels down to three runs; five Kernels pitchers gave up 14 hits and eight earned runs. Joe Torres continued a horrible line in Cedar Rapids only half as bad as that he suffered in Rancho. He's coming back from Tommy John surgery that ended his 2004 season. That he's able to pitch so shortly after the surgery says a lot about how much this procedure has progressed.

Sales: 2-4, 1 RBI

Here's what Baseball America had to say about fifth-rounder Thomas Mendoza:
2005-08-15: Billings 1, Orem 3Edwards: 0-2, 2 BB

West: (L, 0-2) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.41 ERA
Here's what Baseball America had to say about fifth-rounder Thomas Mendoza:
Mendoza is a pure projection pitcher. He was primarily a catcher until his sophomore season and was buried in a high school rotation that included White Sox supplemental first-round pick Gio Gonzalez last year. He pitched in just four high school games entering his senior season, but showed a feel for three pitches as well as enough arm strength to elicit interest in the third to fifth rounds. His fastball was clocked as high as 95 mph in an outing against Chris Dominguez and Gulliver Prep, when he went the distance, striking out 14 in a win. Mendoza’s curveball has potential to be an above-average pitch, although his secondary pitches—his arsenal includes a slider, cutter and changeup--are inconsistent. His control improves when he slows his delivery down, as he tends to rush and get offline. He’s mature; scouts like his makeup and aptitude. Though he’s committed to Miami, he’s considered signable if he goes in the top five rounds. He’ll require at least a year of Rookie ball if he signs.35 strikeouts and only eight walks. Not really enough innings yet to get a read on him, but damn, look at those shiny peripheral numbers and that sparkle-pretty 1.58 ERA. I should say similar things about Brad Beck, who appears to be all of 20 this year.
Statia: 2-3
Boyer: 2-4
Morris: 2-4, 1 RBI
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 RBI

Edwards: 2-3
Stanley: 1-1, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Stults: (W, 3-4), 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 5.82 ERA
Mahomes: 1.1 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.06 ERA
Osoria: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.26 ERA
You always like to see more strikeouts, but this is hot, high Vegas, so we'll take our joy where we can find it; that's why, while I'm not overly impressed with Franquelis Osoria's line here, I can still endorse the good minor league season he's slowly assembling in a famously hostile environment. Good for him.

I just found out -- well, I could have found out by looking, but I didn't think to -- that the Angels and Dodgers AAA teams will close their seasons against each other on Labor Day Weekend. Too bad Vegas is a complete zoo around that time -- it could be fun to see prospects from both systems at one shot.

Comments:
Wouldn't the interest in seeing the season-ending series in Vegas require some actual Dodger prospects to have made it past AA?
My point is that Vegas doesn't have many interesting prospects at all, just Young and Aybar, who was there when you were making your criticisms of the Dodgers not having prospects after AA. It would be much more interesting if the Dodgers had at least a few more prospects playing in Vegas rather than a roster that is composed of guys who are no longer legitimate prospects.
