Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

UTK Madness

From today's UTK:

Waivers Bums

Jayson Stark at ESPN gives us a list of players who successfully cleared waivers, and among them are Rafael Palmiero and Mike Sweeney. While I won't suggest, as Richard did with Spiezio the other day, physical violence to anyone making suggestions about the Angels picking up either of these guys, I also note with some glee that Scott Schoeneweis has made the cut, too, as have LaTroy Hawkins, Justin Speier, Steve Kline, and Jason Christiansen. Among starting pitchers: Tom Glavine (cue how-hath-the-mighty-fallen music), Joel Pineiro, Odalis Perez, Eric Milton, Jose Lima, and Ramon Ortiz.

On the other side of the fence, in the Who Knew? department, here's some selected players who actually got claimed: Bret Tomko, Aaron Harang, Jamie Moyer, Gil Meche, and Daryle Ward. Daryle Ward? The Krispy Kreme brother?

OP To 15-Day DL

Looks like Odalis Perez has hit the 15-day DL, and will be replaced by Edwin Jackson in the interim. Judging by today's game (in which he failed to get out of the fifth) it appears my intuition that he should have been left in AA was right.

The Suboptimal Usage Of Parts

Chronicles is already all over the Times piece in which Scioscia admits GA might not play left field anymore this year, but could be used exclusively as a DH. Instead, the Chronicler infers, this means Erstad is moved to left with Kotchman starting at first. The problem with this lineup is that it still has Steve Finley in it.

Comments:
I used to read a number of obscure baseball books and every now and again, I would see Mike Marshall's name come up. I remember reading a book by two baseball wives--Marshall's and Mike Torrez'. Another book I reads was Peter Golenbock profiling a senior league baseball team. Marshall played a large role in the former book, a smaller role in the latter and in both he came off as less than likeable.
