Pickoff Moves
Roster Notes
- The Cubs finally did the decent thing, moving expensive LOOGY Mike Remlinger to the Red Sox. Remlinger was DFA'd on Sunday after an ineffective season (0-3, 5.45 ERA). The Red Sox will send minor league pitcher Olivo Astacio in return.
- The Padres' Adam Eaton has returned to the DL, with a strained right middle finger. RHP Chris Hammond came off the 15-day DL to replace him.
Angels 2006 TV Package In Doubt
Maybe Arte shoulda kept his mouth shut about starting that cable network. The Times is reporting that the Angels are having a hard time finding a broadcast partner for their 2006 games:Angel telecasts this season include 49 games on Channel 9 and 102 on FSN West. With Channel 9 dropping the Angels for the Dodgers next season and network commitments making weeknight telecasts problematic on other channels, the Angels would like to air 35 to 50 weekend games on Channel 5 or Channel 13, with FSN again carrying more than 100 games.Of course, Disney couldn't get its network started when the Angels were a nonentity. It does seem to me that Arte can get what he wants done, but the hurdles are going to be pretty large. If he does want to get this party started, he'd better get cracking on it now. But, under a contract that expires in 2008, FSN is required to carry only 50 games. So far, FSN has refused to sign up for additional broadcasts unless the Angels extend the contract, which would keep Moreno from starting his own cable channel. The Angels prefer to negotiate telecasts through 2008 and keep their options open beyond then, although Moreno recently said he was undecided on the cable venture.
More On Gene Mauch
The first being from Ross Newhan, who's made more appearances in the last week than he has all year, it seems:"Tell me," he said, "am I supposed to feel tormented? Am I supposed to feel that all those years added up to only torment?"Next, this piece by Mike Penner:I had my keys out and was halfway in the car as I fumbled for an answer.
"Gene," I said, "I think those years added up to much more than torment."
Mauch was the best manager a rookie writer could have had. He was a rarity in that he understood the sportswriters' end of the game — we needed angles, we needed quotes and we needed them quickly — and knew how to help, and cared enough to help, provided you first showed him you were taking the assignment seriously enough.
I Know How You Feel, Blez
... except, change the color scheme to green and gold:It's one game. Only one game. But tonight's game was absolutely, incredibly painful. Make no mistake about it, I really don't like that team in red. I hate losing to them pretty much more than any other team.
Seth Speaks On King Felix
Seth Strohs analyzes M's teenage phenom Felix Hernandez's latest start against the Twins. He threw 71 of 94 pitches for strikes in yesterday's game. That could play into the Angels' offensive strengths provided they don't just beat those balls into the ground.Newer› ‹Older
