Roster Notes: Salmon Far, Escobar Near
A bunch of Angels-related stuff:
- First, something we already knew, that being Tim Salmon will not play in 2005:
Salmon has been rehabbing in Arizona and began to take dry swings in June, but he stopped after his shoulder began to hurt. He has since resumed swinging from the batting tee and has been experiencing irritation in his knee.
I've been doing a research project on Salmon on the prospect -- now almost certain -- that he won't be around next year, either in a major league uniform, or for the Angels. More on this later. - "Dallas McPherson tweaked his back Thursday and will be evaluated Monday in Los Angeles, Scioscia said." What did Stephen Smith say about him? Pretty weird because he appeared in Friday's Salt Lake game.
- "The Angels would prefer that [Steve Finley] remain a regular, but they also recognize the need for run producers." I take it that he's approching Spiezio-2003-land, and management is cognizent of this.
- You may read into this a possible admission that Escobar will return to the club as a reliever, somewhat reluctantly. If so, it's a good stopgap solution, but with Santana increasingly effective, the question of whether to return both Byrd and Washburn is becoming somewhat clearer; certainly, Byrd can and should take a walk, mainly due to age considerations, with Washburn's case maybe a little less clear.
