Roster Notes
- Well, I must say, it's about time: the Mariners have released Scott Spiezio. There's no way he was getting any trade interest with his .064 average on the year. Greg Dobbs is expected to be called up from AAA Tacoma as his replacement. Hosannahs at U.S.S. Mariner and in the comments section of Lookout Landing, the latter promising more reaction later on. Derek Zumsteg already did a very good review of his time with the Mariners in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
- The Giants activated Moises Alou from the 15-day DL.
- The Red Sox DFA'd last year's World Series hero Mark Bellhorn. Bellhorn, which seems to be an anglophone way of spelling "Spiezio", had collapsed this year with a .216/.328/.360 line in 283 AB.
- Former Angel INF David Matranga has been sent to AA Arkansas after rehabbing a hamstring strain. In 2001, he was a Texas League All Star.
- Update: The Atlanta Braves have purchased the contract of RHP Joey Devine. Baseball America wrote of the Braves' 2005 first round pick
He has plenty of stuff, starting with a mid-90s fastball that touches 97, and throws it from a funky arm angle--not quite sidearm but lower than three-quarters. His frisbee slider, thrown in the mid-80s, is death to righthanded hitters, whom he dominates. Scouts like Devine’s competitiveness, makeup and athletic ability, which allows him to repeat his unorthodox delivery.
I've bagged on the Dodgers for failing to get good players to the Show and getting them to stick there; one of the big disappointments has been Edwin Jackson. Now that Jackson's coming back, I can only hope he does well, and that this isn't the Dodgers getting itchy. I'm anxious. - Kelvim Escobar will start his rehab Tuesday at AAA Salt Lake.
- The Cards activated Larry Walker from the 15-day DL.
