Bart Shakes Hands With 20: Angels 2, Rangers 1

God what an awful night for Izturis, with three errors: I can forgive him for three reasons: first, he's not normally this bad; second, he redeemed himself immediately after the third error by nicely fielding a low line drive to end the eighth inning; and third, because the Angels won.

All of which means Bart has twenty wins on the season, the first to do so in the American League, and so, hurray. Bart has a good shot at winning the Cy Young -- the Jamesian Cy Young predictor has him ranked second. He could get to 21 wins this season, and with the voters reluctant to hand the award to a reliever, he could walk away with it. The only Angel to win the award previously, of course, was Dean Chance, all of twenty three when he got it, beating Sandy Koufax for the honor. (In those days, there was only one award between the two leagues.) Chance pitched in Dodger Stadium most of his Angels career, which didn't hurt; that particular year, Baseball Reference gave it the park's lowest rating (most favorable) for pitchers in its history. Not only did Chance start 35 games, but he appeared in relief 11 times, finishing seven games and garnering two saves. It's just amazing how pitcher utilization has changed. Chance's career was over less than ten years later. There's more on Chance at mlb.com.

Update: If Bart gets a Cy Young, that means Stoneman's free agent pickup record (post 2002, for any significant amount of money) is

Player     +/-
===============
Colon       +
Escobar     +
Guillen     +
Guerrero    ++
Byrd        +
Finley      -
Cabrera     -

More pluses than minuses overall, though I would qualify Cabrera a little, even though he's massively overpaid.

Comments:
I'm still going to call him MaicEEEr.

Chance was also a very pitcher for Minnesota until he blew out his arm. Chance was also the worst batter ever in the history of baseball. All of the guys with worse stats didn't receive nearly as many ABs as Chance received. As a starting pitcher, Chance generally got three to four ABs every fourth game.

i don't know why it matters whether colon gets a cy young. seems like a plus to me, regardless.

You left Guerrero off the list, unless you meant him instead of Guillen...

So I did.
