Minor League Scorebook
As always, news first, then to the bidness at hand:
- From the Wednesday Daily Dish, Dodgers prospect Todd Donovan has 63 stolen bases in 79 attempts, 60 of which came at AA Jacksonville.
- In Tuesday's Jacksonville doubleheader, Russ Martin gave the Suns consecutive game-winning boosts. In the first game, he hit a walkoff home run, and in the second, he made a walkoff -- walk. Heh.
- It's Wednesday again (at least, as of this exact moment when I'm
writing this -- I have no idea about publication time), which
means it's time for yet another Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet:
1. Kendry Morales -- Generally considered the best position player to ever defect from Cuba, Morales signed a six-year deal in December that could be worth as much as $10 million. It took until late May to get him into the country because of tighter immigration laws. Morales has proved worth the wait. In a combined 90 games between high Class A Rancho Cucamonga and Arkansas, Morales is batting .315-21-68, including a Playstation-like 21-for-34 (.618) with four home runs and 14 RBIs in his last eight.
I also note with some glee that LHP Ray Liotta of the Chisox -- whom I like just for the name -- is on the list, with a 1.80 ERA in four appearances in the Carolina League.
2. Brandon Wood
4. Howie Kendrick
11. Chad Billingsley -- Billingsley entered the year as one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, but dropped off the radar a bit after going 4-4, 4.79 over 16 starts in the season's first three months. Billingsley has looked more like the 2004 model of late, going 4-1, 1.09 in five August starts, while allowing just 14 hits in 33 innings.
13. Erick Aybar -- The reason Brandon Wood is still in the California League, the ultra-toolsy Aybar has gone 20-for-41 in his last nine games, and now leads the Texas League with 157 base hits.
19. Alberto Callaspo -- I guess the Angels have some middle infielders, huh? Promoted to Triple-A in mid-July to make room for Howie Kendrick at Arkansas, Callaspo upped his average 30 points (to .302) in just four days, going 11-for-20. - Arkansas has announced their postseason schedule; the best-of-five division playoff starts September 6 at Tulsa playing two games, and moves to Ray Winder Field on Thursday, September 8, with two additional games to be played if needed. The winner goes on to the Texas League Championship series, a best-of-five affair starting September 12.
- Not really news so much as an appreciation of how good things
are in the Angels and Dodgers systems: Jim Callis recently had
a chat wherein he got asked a bunch of questions about the
various minor league systems around the league, predicting Howie
Kendrick will take over at 2B in 2007, and jinxing the Angels by
calling them "probably the best postseason team in the American
League". But one point he discusses that I hadn't heard of or
even considered was this one:
Chris (Pgh): Comment on the reports that the DRays are planning to keep both Upton and Young in AAA all next year, for $$ reasons. Do these players have any recourse? I'm beside myself with irritation at that franchise... Why would anyone sign with them?
There is simply no way either of the Dodgers or Angels would ever consider such a thing. Sure, they'll make other mistakes, but not that one. Contract Tampa Bay, I say!
Jim Callis: I'll follow up with this one. Chris makes a great point. BA colleague John Manuel and I were discussing this this morning. Upton has had defensive woes this year and needs to switch positions, but he has been ready to hit in the majors all year. Stuck in Triple-A all season, he has kept his mouth shut, worked hard and handled everything very professionally. And he might not even get a September callup? When Upton qualifies for free agency, don't the Devil Rays remember this might weigh on his decision to depart. It's real stupid, and if I were a Tampa Bay fan, I'd be mad that I can't see Upton and Young in the near future.

A perfect night at the plate for Michael Collins. Drew Toussaint hit his 20th dinger of the year. Despite pitcher Chris Waters' attempt to throw the game away -- he faced five batters in the seventh and surrendered five runs while failing to make an out -- the Kernels held on for the win. But the blood was much worse on the other side: Matthew Scherer gave up four runs, all earned, and Tyler "I'd Like To Buy A Vowel" Adamczyk surrendered another five. Michael Gross gave up four runs, none of them earned thanks to a throwing error by Quad Cities' shortstop Matt Shepherd.

Actually, this was the second game of a scheduled doubleheader that was cancelled due to rain. What you see here is a parsing error I'm too lazy to fix at this moment.
