Minor League Scorebook

Tomorrow is the last day of the regular season for the short season rookie leagues, i.e. Ogden and Orem. Jacksonville starts their postseason later today.

According to the Stingers website, Salt Lake pitching coach Bryn Smith was released after the season. Possibly unrelated events:

I'm not saying that Smith had anything to do with these things, but you do wonder with all the things that have gone wrong with Angels pitching this year, there've been plenty of missed opportunities, and little hope for help from the minors. It's most likely that he's just another victim of circumstance, as former Dodger hitting coach Jack Clark was. Still, given the Mazzone effect, you have to wonder.

Update: Stephen Smith wrote to remind me that my memory's failed me; Tim Bittner never pitched at Salt Lake. Also, Bryn wasn't the pitching coach in 2004 so his connection to Jenks and Turnbow is in passing at best.

2005-09-07: Salt Lake did not play
2005-09-07: Arkansas 7, Tulsa 5 #
Aybar, E: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Willits, R: 0-4
Kendrick, H: 2-5, 1 RBI
Napoli, M: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Morales, K: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Porter: 2-3, 1 BB
Olenberger: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 10 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 4.50 ERA
Bang! The Travs roared past the Drillers on Kendry Morales' three-run homer, capping an inning in which Arkansas sent eight men to the plate. Mike Napoli belted a solo shot for good measure. Olenberger held on to the win despite surrendering ten hits and two walks over six.

Jered Weaver gets the start tomorrow at Arkansas. Go Travs!

2005-09-07: Rancho Cucamonga did not play
2005-09-07: Cedar Rapids did not play
2005-09-07: AZL Angels did not play
2005-09-07: Orem 4, Idaho Falls 11 #
Silva: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Rosario: 2-4, 2 RBI
Smith: 2-4, 1 3B, 1 RBI

Mattison: (BS, 2)(L, 1-2) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 8.66 ERA
A meaningless game for both clubs (Orem clinched the division yesterday), Orem put a bunch of non-regulars in to start the game, except for Robert Mosebach.
2005-09-07: Las Vegas did not play
2005-09-07: Jacksonville did not play
2005-09-07: Palm Beach 1, Vero Beach 3 #
Dewitt: 1-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Kemp: 0-4
Raglani: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 K
Dunlap: 1-3
Paul: 0-0
Muegge: 6.2 IP, 1 ER, 1.35 ERA
Alexander: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 0.00 ERA
One out away. Reminiscent of Kirk Gibson's amazing feat in 1988, Palm Beach was one out away from sealing the series when Blake DeWitt blasted a three-run walkoff homer that tied the series in the ninth.
The Dodgers trailed 1-0 in the ninth inning and were one out away from elimination after losing Game 1 of their first round playoff series on Tuesday. Worse, DeWitt was facing Mark Worrell, the Florida State League's toughest closer.

Worrell (0-1) saved a league-high 35 games, and closed a 4-3 win in the series opener. The Dodgers were aware of the difficulty when Worrell is in the game.

"He's got a changeup, a slider, a fastball and he can throw them all of them at any time," Vero Beach manager Scott Little said. "You can't sit on him at all."

The Palm Beach right-hander faced trouble to begin the ninth inning. Pinch-hitter Xavier Paul worked a leadoff walk and moved to third on Cole Bruce's sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by third baseman Mike McCoy. Worrell bore down to strike out Andrew Ellis, and Paul was thrown out at home on Jamie Hoffmann's groundout to first baseman Andy Schutzenhofer.

DeWitt, who was 0-for-4 and had left three men in scoring position, fouled off several tough pitches before his homer to right clinched a victory that Little called "the most exciting of my managing career."

Tommy Lasorda waxed equally enthusiastic, saying "To see when that young man crossed across home plate, and all his teammates crowd around him was just so exciting." I'll bet it was.
2005-09-07: Columbus did not play
2005-09-07: GCL Dodgers did not play
2005-09-07: Ogden 0, Casper 2 #
Rivera: 0-2
Apodaca: 2-4
Robinson: 2-4, 1 K
Arias, M: (L, 4-4), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 5.48 ERA
Pfeiffer: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.62 ERA
Ivan De Jesus was hit by a pitch in the first inning and immediately replaced by Juan Rivera. A meaningless game for both teams, as Casper is out of it and Ogden has a playoff berth secured. A good effort by Marlon Arias spoiled by the silence of Ogden bats.
