Minor League Scorebook
- Dodgers' first-round draftee Luke Hochevar has decided not to enroll at the University of Tennessee. He still hasn't signed with the Dodgers.
- In that same article, aside from Hong-chih Kuo, C Mike Rose also got a callup to the big club.
- Bret Prinz was released by the Angels.
- Former Dodger Hideo Nomo, now with the Yankees in their AAA Columbus club, threw 7.1 scoreless innings in a 5-0 win over the Toledo Mudhens. He struck out 10 and allowed only three hits and a walk. It was his seventh start with the Clippers. Nomo was released earlier in the year by Tampa Bay.
- FutureAngels' blog entry today covers the individuals in the Angels system affected by Hurricane Katrina, as well as Brandon Wood's monstrous achievement, hitting more home runs in the minors than any other Angel ever.
Gorneault: 2-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB
Mathis, J: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB
Allen: 2-5, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Wood, B: 0-5
Specht: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Escobar: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.51 ERA
Andrews: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.41 ERA
The Angels and Dodgers' minor league affiliates played each other at the top and bottom of their respective minor leagues, and the Angels' kids blew the Dodgers' kids away in both cases. (Yes, yes, I know about the 51's being bereft of any real prospects.) In this case, the Angels had a ringer in the guise of Kelvim Escobar on the mound. Though limited to a 75-pitch count, Escobar said of his outing, "I'm more than happy. I'm ready to go. I wasn't thinking about my elbow. In my first two (rehab) starts, I walked too many."
My coworker friend should have been in the stands to see his cousin Nick Gorneault hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth, not to mention walk, double, and single. A great night at the plate for Nick, and especially for Jeff Mathis, who powered two out of the park. Even Brian Specht got one in the stands. Great fun for the kids! Well, everyone except for Brandon Wood, who got promoted tonight and went 0-5.
Salt Lake is still two games back of division leader Tacoma.
Willits, R: 1-4
Kendrick, H: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Napoli, M: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Morales, K: 2-4
O'Sullivan: (L, 1-4), 2.1 IP, 8 ER, 10 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 2 HR, 6.16 ERA
Staff ace Daniel Davidson missed his start because of a blister on his pitching hand, and so Mark O'Sullivan took his place, with craptacular results. A six-run second inning ensued, capped by a three-run dinger from Cody Haerther.
Sugden: 3-4, 1 3B
Holcomb: (W, 10-7), 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 9 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 5.02 ERA
Zimmermann: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.32 ERA
A great outing for James Holcomb, who isn't on any of the prospect lists that I know of. Nine strikeouts in seven innings is a great job.
Collins: 1-3
Toussaint: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Madrigal: 0-4
Espinoza: (W, 1-0), 5.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1.69 ERA
This game was won in the first, with a leadoff double by Sean Rodriguez follwed up by a Michael Collins double and a Drew Toussaint home run. As for the pitching, a good debut game by Espinoza at this level; he got three groundouts and six fly outs. Sounds a bit like Jered Weaver.
Cedar Rapids remains two games back of division leader Quad Cities.
Update 9/3: this was actually Espinoza's debut for the Kernels.
Morris: 2-7, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 K
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Wipke: 2-4, 2 HR, 6 RBI
Boyer: 2-6, 1 2B, 3 K
Maldonado: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Martinez: 2-2, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Cowles: 1-6, 4 K
Mosebach: 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 1 HR, 4.57 ERA
Sullivan: (W, 5-2) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 5.15 ERA
KABOOM! That sound you hear is the sound of Ogden's bullpen imploding. This looks like a laugher based on the score, but believe it or not this one went into extra innings. With the score tied 4-4 in the 12th, Orem came up with an incredible twelve runs. Somehow, they managed to make it hold up. Thanks to fielding errors by Ogden 3B Russell Mitchell and 2B Jesus Soto, a hit batter (by Ramon Troncoso), a wild pitch (by Alvin Hayes), and a passed ball (by catcher Matthew Gomez de Segura), fifteen men came to the plate. Ogden burned three pitchers trying to get out of that inning, and believe it or not, there was only one unearned run. I bet everyone was glad to go home after that one.
Orem now has a one-game lead over Ogden in the South division.
Jackson: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Eckert: (L, 5-10), 5.2 IP, 7 ER, 8 H, 1 K, 4 BB, 3 HR, 6.38 ERA
Carlyle: 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.88 ERA
Martin, R: 1-4
LaRoche, A: 1-4
Loney: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 3B
Alvarez, N: 1-1, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Hull: (L, 7-7), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.38 ERA
Miller: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.75 ERA
A good game for Miller but a tough loss for the Suns, who stay two games back of Carolina. Sean Tracey got the win for Birmingham.
Dewitt: 0-4
Kemp: 0-4
Dunlap: 0-4
Denker, T: 2-4, 1 K
Megrew: (L, 0-2), 1.2 IP, 6 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 20.25 ERA
Muegge: 3.1 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.38 ERA
Bott: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 5.08 ERA
Rivera: 2-5
Locke: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Pfeiffer: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5.83 ERA
Horlacher: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1.93 ERA
Ramirez: 3.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1.99 ERA
Troncoso: (L, 6-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.53 ERA
