Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition
Washburn To Start Saturday
Washburn will start Saturday, but the story isn't all that rosy. Wash still claims to be about 90%, which means he's probably going to struggle no matter who he's opposing. The other trouble is that Mike would like to move Colon so he faces the A's next week, but this is problematic for the hole it creates in the Devil Rays series. Joe Saunders just isn't that appetizing, and the other options -- pitching Colon or Lackey on three days rest, or a piecemeal bag of relievers on Sunday -- don't sound too good either. Since I didn't get to yesterday's, it'll get packaged in with today's for good measure:- Bobby Crosby's jammed his already busted ankle. He was held out of Tuesday's game, and is essentially day-to-day but must wear a brace.
- Justin Duchscherer is out of the lineup with back trouble for a couple games.
- J.D. Drew should be ready by spring training.
- David Wells is hoping a cortisone shot will fix his knee and thence his control problems.
- After taking a Vlad Guerrero line drive off his melon, Kameron Loe is expected to make his next start.

The M's look to have made a mistake with their big offseason signing of Adrian Beltre (though we won't really know it until he's done with the contract), but if today's Prospectus article about aging curves is right, the M's can comfort themselves, a little, by knowing their commitment to him is on the left side of the steepest part of the decline curve for third basemen. Notice I didn't say he won't decline, but given that most hot corner guys appear to start declining after their age 27 season, it's reasonable to expect Beltre will continue to hold whatever value he currently has fairly well. And there's always the possibility he's having a first-year funk from getting the big dollar contract. I've seen that happen, too, viz. Carlos Beltran in New York.
