Pickoff Moves
Roster Notes
- Rich Harden may be available as early as Sunday for bullpen work. He supposedly hasn't got his changeup back. If they're rushing him, it could be a positive thing for the Angels.
- Even though the O's have reestablished contact with Sammy Sosa, his season is over. (Like, duh.)
Races
- The most interesting race of all (outside the AL West, natch) went nowhere as Freddie Garcia 4-hit the Twins in an 8-1 pounding. Amazingly, only two home runs were hit in the game, a solo shot by Joe Crede and a three-run dinger by Jermaine Dye. Do we credit Dye, who hit his 30th home run of the season (very near to equalling the career high of 33 he got in Kansas City) with finally coming out of a slump? Is Comiskey II/U.S. Cellular that much of a hitter's park?
- Meantime, Cleveland pasted the reliably paste-able Royals, 11-4, so no division movement.
- There wasn't any movement in the AL Wild Card, either, with Boston beating Baltimore 4-3.
- In the AL East, the Yanks lost 7-4 to the Blue Jays, and are tied with the Red Sox for the division.
- In the NL West, the Snakes surprised the Padres with five runs in the eighth, delaying the Padres' clinch another day. The Diamondbacks still have wispy hope, with an elimination number of two, but they'd just about have to win all their games from here on out.
- Atlanta got a game closer to clinching by beating Florida 6-1. The Braves' magic number is three.
- In the NL Wildcard, Houston beat the Cubs 8-3, taking a two-game lead over the Phillies, who lost 3-2 to the fifth-place Reds. Incidentally, it looks like Houston will be able to play their final season series at home as the storm spared most of that city.
UTK Quick Hits
From today's UTK:- Here's something you probably don't think about: apparently the contortions Jason Giambi needs to shag all of Jeter's bad throws are banging up his already torqued back.
- Larry Walker's availability continues to be in question as he took another needle to the neck, full of cortisone.
- Now that the Giants have joined the Dodgers -- or nearly so -- in the also-ran pile, Jason Schmidt may get shut down. The Giants have a 2006 option on him, and exercising that will depend on his health.
Comments:
Don't be in a hurry about the NL Wild Card. The 'Stros face the Cubs one more time before heading to St. Louis for two, then finish the season in Houston against the Cubs for four. The Phillies face the Mets and the Nats. I'm not making any predictions, but do think the Astros need a healthy Clemens to win. Their magic number is 6 with seven games remaining.
