Coming In Hot: Angels 3, White Sox 2
But enough of the pessimism for now.
The Angels came in underdogs, tired after flapping their arms cross country for three straight days, came off the plane and settled in to bloop the White Sox to death. That is, it was a perfect Mike Scioscia kind of game, won on a fielders' choice, an infield single, and leavened with a Garret Anderson home run.
Paul Byrd won the first postseason game of his career, keeping the Chisox mostly off balance and off the bases, providing the Angels with three 1-2-3 innings, retiring the first six in order. Through six, he more-or-less matched Contreras pitch-for-pitch, save that Byrd was better.
As Matt would say, redemption is now seven wins away.
Really proud of an entire pitching staff and how it's held up their end of a totally unfair bargain.
That said, Frankie is really making me nervous. I don't know how long he can get away -- in a 7 game series no less -- with throwing just one vertical curveball after another. Some of them looked like they were already adjusting their swings to take the ball's arc early.
I'm just glad I completely underestimated the Angels tonight. Smallball may be a little crazy, but their moxy makes me proud.
Funny, I don't remember snarfing a bagful of painkillers.
Vlad finally hit the ball hard, another encouraging sign. If we can steal another one tonight, that would be awesome.
Last time Buerhle faced Wash, neither of them were any good. Vlad scored from second on a bunt in the 12th.
