The Rev has a BTF thread link quoting one of the posters there who calls the Sox a "goodish team" and cites the immense number of breaks with the umpires and opponent injuries the Sox have received. Of course, this immediately drew a rejoinder from one of the Sox faithful. But it's worthwhile mentioning a few things here:
- The 2002 Angels had a 101-61 Pythagorean record that year, higher than the 99-62 Yanks, the 86-75 Twins, and the 95-66 Giants. That is, the 2002 Angels had the highest Pythagorean winning percentage of any playoff team that year, including the Oakland A's, who won the division but got knocked out in the first round. They underperformed their Pythagorean record by about two games.
- In contrast, the 2005 Angels outperformed their Pythagorean record by two games, while the Chisox outperformed their Pythagorean record by eight wins. That's just a few too many to be comfortable with, and at some point -- maybe today, maybe in the World Series -- they unravel.
